Show us your turntable

I think I’ve asked this before, so apologies if also answered, but would you mind creating a thread with details of your custom build and it’s history/development? A bit like the recent threads about speaker building by the Marks.

It was indeed my question, thanks. I have already see that turntable somewhere, maybe on Mono and Stereo.
As N-lot, I would be very curious to know more. Nice design!

Stephen,

Glad you enjoyed the story! My resident cartridge is an Audio Technica AT-OC9 MLII however what’s on it at the moment is a Lyra Kleos SL but that’s running in for review and sadly not mine! There’s also a Kiseki Blue NS waiting in the wings. In the past I have used the Dynavector DV17D2 and older AT-OC9’s on the same turntable.

I used to play so much vinyl I couldn’t afford to be replacing exotic cartridges every year or two hence my love for middle rank cartridges like the OC9. Nowadays I play less vinyl as we stream so much and the vinyl comes out on weekends and special occasions so running something more exotic would be feasible I guess!

I have a BO 4001 like yours. It needs some work. If you could give put me in touch with your restorer it would be appreciated.

I now have an RP10/Aphelion/Aria which sounds sublime. I had Loricraft restore my Thorens TD124 Mk II and put it on one of their plinths.

Many thanks

Phil

Please be assured I have no commercial interest in anything audio and nothing is planned either.

Hi Phil,

My 4002 was service/restored by a local guy here in Jersey, Channel Islands, who’s very good but, due to other commitments, takes for ever.

Hi Dutus

Thanks for getting back to me. Jersey is a bit more difficult! I paid £80 for mine in about 2007. When I stopped using it for a year the tangential arm refused to move. It made a very nice sound with my Cyrus amp and Clearaudio Nano phono stage. I looked up likely faults bit not really in to replacing components.

Phil

Hi Phil,

You’re welcome.

I paid around £550 for mine a couple of years ago or so. Supposedly serviced - like h*ll it was! Cost me another £300 or so to get it properly up and running. It’s now in my bedroom awaiting connection to my Cyrus 8vs2 amp.

My Beogram 8002 is in the living room, connected to my Marantz 2275 receiver and sounds lovely (it’s cartridge, a MMC2, is higher up the food chain than the one on the 4002. The Rega Planar 3 is running through the Supernait 3 and sounds great too.

Gorgeous !
How does the Thorens compare to the Feikert ?

Thanks!

Well, both record players are completely different. Even the different Reed Arms on the Firebird do not compare, mainly due to the different characteristics of the zyxx and
mysoniclab cartridges.

The Feickert is dead silent, due to the running of 3 motors, the decoupling of the ansuz feet. This gives a black underground to the music, full of detail and focus. on this record player I listen to music like Radiohead, REM, Elvis Costello, with the zyxx cartridge. The Feickert with the mysoniclab cartridge is great with jazz, like Miles Davis, Charles Lloyd and vocal voices like Nora Jones, Diana Krall, Nathalie Merchant etc.

The Thorens is driven with a tube phono pre amp, and breaths Soul. I is quiet, but there is a little rumble wich gives that sort of dirty bad ass sound. playing Marvin Gaye, Charles Bradley, Aretha Franklin kind of music sound the way it should be.

So when I pick out a record, that is the moment I decide witch turntable and arm will suit the music.

The NDX 2 is for moments I do not want to flip records, like during dinner or having friends over. For my digital music is great, and has developed. But with analog music, everything emotionally is a total different feeling.

A lovely set up. That Thorens is on my wish list but will probably have to stay there. I find it so appealing, the retro look. Very nice.

Thanks Dashing. This Thorens 124 is my 5th. And every time I sold one, I got more back than I paid for. So it is like money on the bank, while enjoying it :notes:. And that is different as other turntables and audio equipment. This Thorens is on that will always stay.

That’ll be the Thorens 124DD, yes?

It’s good to see more Feickert decks in the thread. I’m biased of course, but I think they look really good with clean layout and play well. I also like that the platter starts and stops on a dime.

That Firebird deck from Feickert looks huge compared to my Woodpecker! The Reed tone arms are interesting. I heavn’t heard one but they seem to show up on quite a few Feickert turntables. I take it you have two on the Firebird. How come you decided for them, compared to alternatives?
