I never cease regretting the day I sold my 42/110. Must have been 1984.

I use a 42.5/hi cap/110 as the main system and love it.

I have a nait 50 and it sounds very good, but its lack of a balance control stops me using it.

At 72 years,my ears are no longer equal!

I rate the 42/110 one of Naims most iconic products, Its what I started with in 1982,though not the same ones I have now.

Humble but sounds good to me

Nothing really humble about it. It’s a serious deck.

Going to say the same thing.

I hope nobody minds me saying, but nearly all of us have what many people would think of as serious audio , and whether it is a top of the range SME or a basic Technics /Rega/ProJect we have all made the decision that we will make space or music in our lives

I’m getting a used P8 at a very good price this week to replace a P6; I hope the improvement will be significant…

That looks pretty cool with the transparent plate.
Transparent plate transparent sound….:thinking::rofl:

I think the “essential” mat takes away the stunning look, unfortunately, though I appreciate a ‘vinyl’ spoils the look in any case. :joy:

I received the P8 today, and I think it’s superb! It’s a matter of taste, but for me, it’s a work of art… I’ve listened to a few tracks (Kenny Burrell, Al Jarreau), and compared to the P6, the sound is more defined, more detailed… I’m going to continue listening!

Gorgeous! Congratulations and enjoy!

Haven’t thought about it before but now realise that the glass platter on white P8 is transparent and on black P8 black/smoked.

I bought it for 1400 euros with an Ania Pro cartridge approximately 50 hours long, isn’t that a nice deal?

That is a great deal! I sold mine a year back for 1600 euros without cartridge.

I assembled the ND7 that I had on the P6, I will resell the Ania Pro, I don’t want such an expensive cartridge…

Now a good week and many records in after my last upgrade with the Prefix S and DV20X2-L.

I think it has now settled enough to have a good idea of where it sits and is going. And, to realise that this is not for me. Not that it isn’t good, because it really is, the amount of detail and microdynamics is amazing. But it opens a brightly lit large window that puts my whole system balance out of whack. I should change speakers and headphones and perhaps even amp to accommodate this, but these are performing wonderfully in our room with the digital source.

Had this been my starting point I would have built a different system around it. Now I have to find alternatives that bring it in line with the existing system. As such this constitutes another valuable lesson on system balance, what works, what doesn’t. This feels as 1 upgrade too far.

Obviously I had hoped to find instant audio nirvana, but this is my first low output MC system, so a change of both cartridge and phono stage. Analogue often involves trial and error and this time I was somewhat prepared that with many options it could take multiple efforts.

I have contacted my friendly long suffering dealer and we will discuss ways forward next week. There are some obvious scenarios:

  • keeping the Prefix S, but try a different MC cart
  • keeping the DV cart, but replacing the Prefix S with a Stageline S (who knows)
  • going back to MM well, with a good ND7 or more serious, a Vetere Sabre version

Given the “brightly lit wide window” problem description I half expect to end up with the MM option, my ears are what they are and they appear to be different from those of many others.
