Various customers have questioned the 24bit side of Spotify. At the moment Spotify have more 16bit material than 24bit, but it is available.
Here is an example of 24bit playing to a CI102 via Spotify Connect and delivering OGG/FLAC 24/44.1kHz. Left hand side is Spotify with lossless enabled account, right hand side is the product diagnostics showing that we are getting a 24bit FLAC file:

Fascinating, at least assuming the info is correct. But Qobuz still pays artists more per track than Spotify. So if I switch my subscription from Q to S and stream a track the artist will still earn less. That’s the relevant calculation for an individual subscriber.

Well that depends. If a band has 100 000 streams on Spotify and 5000 on Qobuz they should still earn more money from Spotify. Spotify have a user base on about 700 000 000 users and Qobuz 2-300 000 users.
I think PM’s point was regarding the incremental difference his subscription would make in each case.

You’re missing the point. In Peakman’s scenario there would then be 99,999 streams on Spotify and 5,001 on Qobuz, so the artist would benefit.

Not to stray from topic but for most part most bands don’t earn much from streaming, it’s more promotion for their tours. So almost like an on demand radio station.
If want to really support a band go see them on tour and buy their merchandise. Spotify actually has links to both within their app.
In the real world don’t think artist earns much of anything from Qobuz since user base is so small even with slightly higher rate per track. Also pretty sure most of these streaming services that pay more is because label demands it due to their small size even if claim for artist benefit. So I’m basing my decision around which service provides me with the features I like. Hires real doesn’t have much impact either if masters are the same. Rather have complete library from artist instead of finding missing back catalogs.

Actually artists make more total money from Spotify due to their much larger listener base.

I think I will drop roon/qobuz as soon as linn officially supports lossless spotify, which may take (a long) time.
You guys are very lucky to have very responsive Naim software engineers.

Probably not since the user base on Qobuz is likely mostly men over 50 that listen to Dire straits and HIFI music that can pay more for real high fidelity which is such a tiny bit of the overall market. It’s not possible to define a 100% truth here saying Qobuz pays better. If you look at the bank account for Taylor Swift I can assure you she gets more from Spotify and if you look at a small jazz band they likely get more from Qobuz. Different markets, user groups etc. Looking at the single payout per stream doesn’t mean much in the bigger perspective IMO. It’s mostly marketing to get more music loving +50 men into their system. But the artist wont earn much more since the user base is so very small compared to Spotify. If you get into a playlist on Spotify you can suddenly go from nothing to make a living out of your music. The power there is huge because they have 700 000 000 users.

It would be interesting to see how much she earn from Qobuz. 1000 USD maybe? But they pay her most per stream atleast 
Different audience, target groups, business models. But one cannot look at a single stream and say Qobuz is the best. Taylor doesn’t approve.
We have to keep mind that Swift probably earns even more from her rights to her music than from her streams… Most artists that are under contract of a label only get about 15% of the revenue.
That means that on average an artist who’s under contract with a label earns around 0,0006 on a stream at Spotify.
So if an artist has ‘only’ one million streams at Spotify then the artist will have earned 600 bucks before taxes…
I see we’re getting slightly off topic again; I’m certainly very happy with Spotify Lossless. In a family with four who all use Spotify, it wasn’t practical nor cost-effective to have a second streaming service just for myself. Couldn’t be happier now
