Superline Discontinued

@Thegreatroberto
Ah, okay, nice to know that occurred. Great to read that.

I can’t recall the exact date but I do remember spinning vinyl demonstrating it with the Avid Acutus, Aro and Slide with a Dynavector XV1T cartridge at the Heathrow show in… Autumn of 2007?

Yes, agreed. My feelings too. And yes - with a mix of systems - definitely “Get it”…
By coincidence, was only thinking about all this at the weekend.
Here is a longer post - on a related topic - which was written for Sunday reading. So sharing it here, into your thread, as it is also about the SuperLine. Enjoy.

We are NOT persuaded to change anything in our olive system. We absolutely love what the SL brings to the party. Although, I do sometimes think the SL + HCDR is a bit of a cheat - an imposter - and a more era correct solution might be more honest. It’s a philosophical idea, as much as anything.

Wishing you lots of enjoyment - listening to vinyl anew - with a SuperLine.

Sad to hear the Superline was discoed. It was to be my end game phono amp. Guess I will stay with the Cyrus Phono signature awhile. I still have an excellent Stageline S in reserve just in case.

I had the phono signature and psxr2 before my SL. I was a bit hesitant as I enjoyed the cyrus.

The first week or so with the SL, i was a little uncertain. A play with loading plugs got things right. Wouldn’t go back now. Mine is “only” powered via the aux2 plug, but i am happy with it this way.

My Gyro/rb3000/linn krystal/sl compares very well to my ndx2/555dr. Both sources scoring over the other only on their own source/vinyl.

Thank you R and I enjoyed reading the post you linked in :+1:

Richard - a lift from ye olde Forum. If memory serves there was some delay between the news leaking-out about this new product (early-ish H2-2007?) and it hitting the retailers. This affirms that @Thegreatroberto ‘s unit would have been one of the early ones.

If any of you are in a position to visit either of the forthcoming shows , CES Las Vegas or Manchester Sound & Vision then Superline will be at these events.

The “official” product release will be Bristol Sound & Vision Feb. 22nd-24th.

Full details will appear on our website shortly.

Thanks HL, that makes sense and would tally with my recollection of demoing the pre-production unit at the Heathrow show in 2007.

Hi Peter,

I have not heard it but in a way I thought and also feared, from a cost point of view, that this would be the case!

p.s. I am a Machined Radikal 2 with a Superline user

Just arrange for your retailer to do the comparative demonstration as and when you’re ready and for yourself and you may find that the middle option of having your machined Radikal upgraded to the Utopik PS replacing the existing power supply is the way for you to go…..

I have just had this upgrade done courtesy of @Cymbiosis
I haven’t had a lot of time really to compare but as is so far a no brainer and keeps my box up to date and serviceable.
I did this option because I’m doing MM cart now and don’t use the Urika.
A great experienced dealer makes this a very painless and worthwhile upgrade. :+1:

I still rate Superline quite highly. It’s the best phono stage I have heard to date.
As you have migrated out of Naim family I understand that its sonic signature not to your liking.

That said, I have tried out various Superline in my system and guess what, sample to sample variance was quite large. Mine sat in the middle of the pack out of three I have listened to. I was going crazy due to the hum issue it developed after 10 years so I was borrwing others at random as part of investigation.

Good choice, C.

Superline will be a nice addition to the nice olive system. Fed via aux2 of 52 I thought it sounded better, than through a hi-cap. Someday you might have the chance to try a prefix, which is also nice with full olive. But do not know if it fits inside your tuned lp12.

Thanks a lot for the eol information - will look for a superline.

I’ve have 2 superlines in my time. The first one was secondhand and i ran it from a 52, and a supercap. Then i moved away, then year’s later i bought a brand new one and supercap dr at the same time, plus air plugs, etc. I have certainly gone all in with superlines over the years.
I certainly enjoyed it and it took something like i have now to really make a big step forward, but then a superline/ supercap dr isn’t exactly cheap

Do you have any issues with hum in your system? When I had the superline in my All Olive system I had some problems with hum and needed to place SL far away from 52.

As you have endured and kindly replied to my many posts on finding balance within the components of the LP12 ecosystem, you know that both phono stage and power supply AND the turntable power supply play a role.

If you’d move from Superline / HC-DR to a Prefix / HC only, I suspect it will be a downgrade. Unless you pair it with a (full width unfortunately) Olive Supercap of course. If you do Prefix and a Radikal at the same time, you’ll have a totally different end result. Whether you’ll like it more or less I don’t know. Also with Radikal 1/2 you can use the Urika1 with your Troika, no need for anything else anymore, options, options…

To my ears there are only two types of LP12, with AC or with DC, so without or with Radikal (well, two and a half actually, Lingo 4 is in between with its low voltage AC motor and digital motor control). The step from Radikal 1 to 2 is again the same magnitude as Lingo 4 to Radikal 1, as it should be. But, in that context the Prefix has been a great surprise to me, big bold Naim.

I was lucky enough to be offered my used K-Radikal 1 for the same price as a brand new Lingo 4, as an original Klimax LP12 was dismantled for parts and no one wanted a silver Radikal, whereas it fits with my retro style LP12 just like it would with yours. And the dealer knew I’d rather have a Majik / Radikal before anything else and gave me a break.

Anyway, all these options like a Superline / HC-DR / Lingo4 or Prefix /HC-or-SC / Lingo4-or-Radikal or Radikal / Urika1 all constitute the same cheating on the classic philosophical concept you described with your current configuration I would say. But that seems unavoidable to reach a certain level, otherwise you’d have to downgrade to Lingo 1-3 or Armageddon as well.

You said NOT, and I just meant to say you may become curious enough to investigate at some point  But I recognise that you are already very good where you are.

None D.

I have left the capacitance input open with just the 500R in the resistance input. With the Solstice that I owned a 1nf cap plug was needed.

Wondering, can I somehow tell when my Superline was made? Perhaps via the S/N?

Yes
Find the serial number in the rear panel and make a note.
Look to the inter-web-a-tron thingy and research key word search “Naim serial numbers”. You’ll find Naim issued serial numbers in ranges, by year.
