Swapping systems between rooms

I’ve just played a few tracks and thought it was quite a bit cleaner on the bass. Pretty good for $150.

I think I’ll grab a few more egg shells to poke under the back of my desk.

I also need to decide whether to wall mount the white panels behind the speakers, they are just leaning there at the moment.

Heading out for a quick walk.

You have seen some diy tutos on YouTube, how to make bass traps?
I feel Thomas will certainly observe that these panels do quite nothing.
But I am curious on your final impressions. With the 252/250, things will move too.

I just made the white panels up from canvas painting blocks that were the right size for the space behind the speakers ($20 each on sale) and cut and fitted 25mm acoustic foam in behind the panels (about $15 each).

The egg shells are acoustic 35mm foam blocks for recording studios etc and where $16 each on special!

It’s a trial, if it works, it stays…

It is worth a go, but reading into the subject I learned that decent bass traps that have any chance of taming the lower registers need to be at least 6 inches deep. Anything thinner will absorb only higher frequencies which could be defeating the object.

But as I say, worth a go and see if things are improved.

Yes, I’ve read this too. I’m really just playing with some easy cheap and aesthetic options to see what affect they have with the room interaction whilst working with the constraints of using the room as an office, movie room and listening room. My first impressions were that the sound was more expansive and cleaner. Whether that is due to reducing or dispersing reflections, or all in my head, I’ve no idea, but as you say, it’s all worth playing with.

Next up is new blinds and curtains this week and I will add a few more egg blocks behind the Fraim and the main desk. I’ve also just ordered a printed canvas block with a family photo that I will place acoustic foam into and mount on the front wall behind the listening couch - to provide a bit of absorption and dispersion on that flat wall.

I’m pretty much finished with my DIY room treatment now and are pretty pleased with the improvements all round, more clarity and deeper sound stage and much tighter and refined bass. A special thanks to @Thomas for the inspiration.

So, we have:

New drapes for the windows. There is a second block-out blind going in on the main windows in front of the UV screen (it was made too long):

Added an extra 80mm of acoustic foam panels behind the my bass traps based on @NigelB’s advice:

Foam egg shells and a couple of foam filled canvas prints as acoustic panels in the corners under the desks:

Foam egg shells behind the Fraim:

Foam seals on the internal doors:

And the piste de resistance for @frenchrooster, my home made acoustic art panel with the subtle Naim reference for the astute:

Nice work. You enjoy the results, it’s nice. Had you put mini bass traps in your shoes too ?

Great work Mike. How would you characterise the difference to SQ your room treatment has made?

I think I would describe it as all sounding more open with additional separation between the different instruments and voices, bringing the whole frequency range into more focus, with a particular benefit at the lower end (I put this down to the combination of the drapes and thicker paneling behind the speakers).

I think it’s a combination of reducing and dispersing reflections primarily which can be done with some fairly simple treatments that can get you well down the road with treatment.

Now for the 252/250 :scream:

If you’re comfortable in the smaller room, assuming the Forests are a good fit, I’d put the big hardware there if it were me. It sounds like it’s a place where you can listen when the bigger room is getting used. And the second system will likely sound great in the bigger room as well. Edit - never mind lol

Well, it has worked out quite well in the end, with a 252/250 yet to come :sunglasses::scream:

Wow, just read the bit about the DRing of an olive SC. That should be interesting. That’s a good jump from the SN2. I went SN1–>SC2–>252 and that was a leap.

I hope the 252/250 will work in your new room. But difficult to predict.
However, even if not, there is always a possibility of smaller speakers.

My dealer is confident it will be fine as the speakers work with the SN2 in that room, he did feel that a 300 would warrant bigger speakers in a larger room to do them justice.

Anyway, I have the smaller Totem Hawks upstairs in the lounge with the Nova and they would be fine on a 250 I think. I might take them downstairs and try them in the smaller room on the SN2 and new system for fun anyway.

Hey Sweetie @frenchrooster - half way to the final system now: sounding lovely, but needs the 250 to round it all out.

I am waiting for your 250 dr. Curious on your impressions. And I hope it will still sounds good in your room. If too much bass, you can eventually swap your speakers. We will see.
( ps: I needed a break from the forum, but I am back)

Content de te revoir! It’s a slow boat to New Zealand at the moment, I think Mike is being very patient waiting for the 250!

Nice to have you back @frenchrooster, I hope you are well.

I’m still waiting for the 250, we’ll actually waiting to even here whether the order will actually come. But, anyway, I’m pretty confident it will be fine, as the 252 with the SN2 as a power amp is working very well. If the 250 doesn’t arrive, I’ll have to reconsider the options.
