System Pics 2019

Hi HH,
what turntable are you using ?

Thanks DJM, you must have a keen eye
That’s correct D-Line trunking keeps things neat and not that expensive about £7 I think

It’s a Rega P1 Plus, yours for £329 with built in phono stage. It’s surprisingly good.

Very nice - the SL2s look good. Probably a question for another thread, but are spare drivers still available for these from Naim ?

:small_blue_diamond:HiFiman,…Whaoo,.It was fast.

But I think it might be a good idea to return to the speaker placement, when you “recorded” them a bit in the room.

In other words,…when you become accustomed to the way they play.
I usually get to make small changes for a long time…Maybe up to six months.

Not sure James, I know the tweeters are available from Falcon etc but they are not matched pairs (if that matters) but regards to the bass unit maybe Richard can confirm.

In a few months the Fraim will be moved from the speaker wall to a side wall this will allow better placement for the SL2s, the journey is not over yet…

re. SL2 drive units, I’ve made an enquiry to Naim.

It’s great to see some more SL2s being used and appreciated. They look really good in your room. They are certainly a big change from the little Tablettes, and I hope you are pleased with the difference. My first pair were cherry, like yours, and I had a black and cherry Fraim. The current pair, and the Fraim, are maple: it’s good to have it all matching. Now you just need that 300.

:small_blue_diamond:HiFiman,…You had Allae previous.?

Can you easily try to describe the differences in soundquality.

/Peder🙂

They look great @HiFiman. Many congratulations on sourcing them and getting them set up correctly. It does take some skill and plenty of patience. I’m sure you will be richly rewarded. When set up correctly they simply disappear. Jason from Naim who kindly set mine up has a maple pair running active with 300DRs. I remember him saying that the SL2s are a two way speaker that sound closer to a three way than anything he’s ever heard. That is a pretty decent endorsement of how special these are. Enjoy.

OK, Naim still have spare drive units in stock for the SL2s, but it’s dwindling, particularly the selected and matched tweeter pairs. Of course, the Scanspeak-made tweeters can still be bought unselected and unmatched from a number of suppliers so when Naim’s stock is exhausted there are still options open to owners. As for the Naim-made mid/bass drivers I guess once they’re all gone there will still be the possibility of 3rd party repair, the only difficulty being if they are actually physically damaged in some way.

Thanks Richard - just curious so thanks for enquiring.

Nice. yes it is good. It is small investment , and you can cut your losses easily if you are bored with playing vinyls at some point. I suspect it won’t happen , as hunting and playing old LPs is fun. In this case you already have the wall shelf for a more ambitious rega .

Thanks Richard

I’ve owned two pairs of Allae’s over the years, 13 years 1st pair and a few months the 2nd pair, in between spanning say 2 years AE301 then Proac Tab 10 both Std and Signature versions.

I have always loved the Allae’s they are underestimated around these parts with only a handful of forum members using them and a bargain on the second hand market, once setup correctly they give a performance that goes well beyond their price tag.

Over the past two days I’m thoroughly enjoying the SL2s what strikes me is their bass handling as with the Allae’s on certain tracks had a slight boom and no position in any of the rooms I have tried over the years eliminated this

The SL2s are perfect on this front and even my 250DR controls the bass with ease with no boom, top end and mid range matches the pin point accuracy and clarity of the Proac Tab 10s that I thought I wouldn’t hear from a floor standing speaker.

Put this way my speaker search has ended but the Allae’s contribution, enjoyment over the years led me towards the SL2 and sticking with Naim speakers.

All diy, very easy. We have a Decoflame one, really high build quality. By the fuel online and in bulk…way cheaper.

My current system. Sorry no socks and no foam grills, although I have a pair of new foam grills I just prefer the sound without.

I can guarantee I would trip over the speaker cables. I’m a bit unsteady balance wise these days, not helped by a dodgy tendon. Nice album selection by the way. I’m after a decent copy of the Suzanne Vega one; mine is knackered. Circle of Life is great too.

I wish I could sort the cables out and get them out of the way but as you will know Nac A5 is not very bendy and compliant.

It’s all work in progress and when I get around to it I will try and tidy everything up a bit.

I bought the old Rel Quake subs (x2) to use with the system as the SBL’s lack the lower base end a bit but still haven’t tried them out and I’ve had them over a year now. Maybe one day.
