System Pics 2019

Finding the whole vibe of that room vaguely disturbing.

System pic update. No radical changes except that a vintage Rega wall shelf now supports the RP6. It was quite a challenge having to work around existing shelving uprights, but a thin timber framed support faced with ply worked beautifully as a solution. The TT power supply and phono stage are now on dedicated shelves, the RP6 level, fully isolated and away from inquisitive fingers! The only other change being the Nait2 is not being used.

SQ improvement? Definitely, although it is only subtle, giving more controlled bass, and the higher frequencies do sound a little crisper / cleaner, which is the best outcome. Record surface noise on some less than pristine discs also seems less prominent too, although this could be the placebo effect.

A simple but effective upgrade. Well worth the hassle of making the support from scratch, although It was rather frustrating not having a system for a few days, and especially the TT unplugged for a week - vinyl withdrawal symptoms!

Yeti, that is a very sleek and subtle blend of different Naim era and Rega gear. It melts so well in your room, looking cool without drawing attention to itself.

Nice one.

@NigelB, thanks Nigel, much appreciated. Space is tight in the room, so realistically I only have one corner for audio kit, but when making the wooden support for the Rega wall shelf I made sure I put enough timber at strategic points so that it could be raised higher to accommodate more Naim boxes underneath

Competing for space with Naim & Rega in this 4x4m room are a desk & twin drawers, Apple Mac & twin screens, a huge A0 (plus) drawing board & draughtsman chair and a fold up futon, hence why there’s so much wall shelving for books / art materials and now records - oh for a dedicated listening room!

@frenchrooster, Not a Quadraspire, but a SoundFactory unit from the late 1980s / 1990s. A modular tripod design where each level has concealed spikes which slot into the top of the round metal tube of the level below, fully isolating each shelf.

The 100mm gap between shelves is a tight fit (on my unit) for Naim Classic boxes, with just about 2-3mm clearance, but it fits Olive / Chrome Bumper cases beautifully, which, the shelving was originally designed around I believe. Taller shelves were available at the time, but SoundFactory are no longer trading so it is down to luck finding them secondhand. Unfortunate really as I think they work really well.

Funnily enough, I am curious about Quadraspire and may buy a Q4 rack if one comes up locally, the only thing that puts me off is I really like the stability of a tripod design.

Edit. Just found this photo…

I used to have a tripod frame, very good indeed and so much easier to assemble than my current Fraim. Your room looks really good, well done.

but on 4 legs.

Now I dont want all of you to be jealous of this one … my 10 year old daughters set up. Upgrades planned are separate mains to it to really get the definition from those 3" speakers …

Actually, my racks are quadraspire- double width svt in black and their wall rack in cherry, which I p/u on that auction site from a dealer in England for a great price and as you can see - true custom (L) speaker stands.

thnx-
The tcd-340 cassette I’ve owned since new. The td-20 was a fairly recent addition. I had an old h.h. scott amp and tuner, which I had bought because it was similar to what my father had, but no room to use it. I found an electronics museum/store that did some repairs for me and made an even trade.

Upgrade - itis
Out with the Nova, In with a 252/SCDR/250DR and a few more fraims
Wife asked me what I added…tried to explain. She has no idea what it meant.

My hi-fo journey started with those exact stages and occasionally, like glitter, I still come across the black plastic tops they supplied for the top of each leg. Indeed my DVD player and Sky+ boxes are separated on the fireplace by a single piece of black MDF shelving which came from you know where. My Hutter looks ahd sounds a lot better but I’ve a lot of affection for the old tripods.

I still use a Tripod under my LP12. Great design.

In process of moving kit around…this will do for now. Once grandkids grow up, then it’s all coming out.
