System Pics 2020

Did not try the 555ps. Drew the $ line. Wasn’t going to spend that much.

Internet radio is amazing. So much out there. I am alternating between my LP12, CDS3 and NDS. Loving the variation of sources, sound and magic that they bring.

I’ve had XPS olive, now the XPS2 and they are along the same lines. I haven’t had the DR version. The 555PS I have is more focused, detailed and greater dynamics. Less warmth. Is the DR more of the same or does it give a much different sound from the olive XPS?

Just better- clarity improved and a layer removed…etc
I’m not good at painting an aural pic but it wasn’t close, the xpsdr was well ahead of the olive xps.

I also use a chord sarum T to connect the ndx2 to the ps.

This is what I found with the 555PS, clearer. Like removing fuzz!

I’ve heard very good things about this cable. So you looking at ditching the CDS2 altogether now?

I meant the Sarum T from ndx2 to 52.
I’m already found a buyer for my cds2 head unit.
I’m holding onto my cd’s as could always get a Core and rip them.

The sarum T was an upgrade over the hiline.
Worth the money ?

I knew what you meant. It’s a big investment in a cable. But from what I am hearing on the forum very worthwhile.

So you now have two black boxes. Are you looking to change out from olive to black or happy to stay as you are for a while?

I am starting to look at my system and imagine all black boxes.

552 500 replacing the 82 and 135s in many many years to come!

I have a mix of boxes and sometimes think it might be better to have them all the same.

Other times I think stick with what I have with 3 generations of Naim boxes.

I’m staying pat now. The obvious moves are 552/500.
That’s a big investment and I’m not ready to make that jump.
I’m enjoying what I have … which is a good place to be

I’m in a similar position @davidf. It’s a big leap financially to go from 52 to 552 and 135s to 500.

That’s my goal. Will wait and see what happens with finances before going for those big decisions

@Dan_M

Old and new sound different but both are fun. Why not keep some old boxes and build a second system?

Once its in place you’ll think the old system is a bargain.

@AJK, @Dan_M, as you both already know, an older system certainly is a bargain. My system -(all gathered together in the last 12 months) 52/sc, 2x135, cds2/XPS, and SBL mkii - cost me £7500 all in!! To put it in context, that’s the price of a 555PS (500 series finish). Sometimes, I definitely feel like I stole my system. :sunglasses::notes:

David,
Does upgrading the XPS to DR, create a significant change for the better, in connection with NDX2 or also in its connection to 52.
I mean, would such an upgrade for OLIVE XPS be significant to the result with the 52?

olive cannot be converted to DR
what I said was going from olive xps to black xps2 dr was a significant improvement with regard to performance of cds2. However , I qualified this by stating my olive xps was prob due for a service so a service of the olive xps may have helped it`s performance. That said the addition of the xps 2dr was a great upgrade.
WRT ndx2, I have only used this with the xpsdr and not tried it alone (though I could certainly do this ). Hope this helps.

Thanks,
It is clear to me that upgrading to DR can only be done from a “black” p.s.
If I understood you correctly, you did not connect the upgraded power supply to 52, but most of its use as a power supply to your sources.
I’m considering the idea of taking such a step in order to improve the performance of the 52 …

ditton, to be clear the xps and xpsdr power supplies are for the CDS2 or in my case the NDX2.
The power supply for the 52 is the supercap- there are no other power supplies for the 52 - just the supercap. My 52 /supercap are Olive. The 252 is the “new version” of the 52. FYI

Oops,
My mistake, I meant to upgrade the SUPERCAP from the OLIVE version to the new version…and its effect on the 52.
But this is not the right thread…
This is probably the age …

Hi Dan. Which stations do you recommend? I like Paradise and KCRW, until they get all folky/New Age-y, and JB is pretty good until the plod rock starts to wear out its welcome. Suggestions always welcome.
