In my experience stands make a massive improvement even for large floor-standers.
The A5’s are known to need a bit of heft to get the best from them, particularly at low volume. The A5R was reputedly less demanding even with a similar sensitivity at 86dbm.
I was driving them with a second NAC72/NAP140. They are a lovely speaker but seemed to lack the natural bass of the big Ditton speakers I was used to. They are beautifully made and I think Spendor use concrete by the weight. If the Dittons ever conk out I might look at the Spendor S9e.
I think the A7 is probably the current equivalent from Spendor ( to the 9e). Once you get in to that territory I think its worth listening to the D7.2 as well. The current Spendors do seem to have come a long way in drivability with typical sensitivity up around the 90dbm mark. I have a like for the Spendor sound signature with Naim kit.
Took the opportunity this evening to do a complete strip down, clean, dust and rebuild. First time since April I think so a lot of dust!
Still warming up but it all sounds lovely.
You should continue to be “content with your modest system”.
My system is in what is known by the family as “my box” (it is a conservatory) but it is my music room, sport TV room and cigar den. I can put the speakers of what ever size I like, wherever I want them. Some wonderful looking systems may be seriously compromised by domestic pressures.
We may have compromises of money (hell did I win the lottery last night?), rooms, domestic harmony etc. but we are all budding audiophiles with a love of music and seeking to achieve the best sound we can achieve within our constraints.
My modest system will give many a run for their money and I am totally content in my system.
Hear hear, I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Always loved that setup of yours. Well done on the cleaning, think I’ll wait until an upgrade before I do mine.
Another pair of white Ovators - wonderful!
Curious what app you run for your sourcing, and how you store it all.
Very nice environnent !
You’re lucky to have some snow.
Rainy weather here, in my region of Switzerland.
I have always had Sugden on my wish list somewhere, but Naim have always got the products I bought.
those speakers are very stylish looking
I use Linn Kazoo App (for the Majik DS/1 streamer) and BubbleUPnP App mainly for other devices both running on an Android tablet. I have my servers on a Windows 10 PC that runs 24/7/365 using AssetUPnP server and Serviio (which supports video and images). Data is stored on a 2TB external hard-drive attached to the PC. I have about 22,000 local tracks and have Qobuz Studio. I also listen to some of the great Internet Radio channels.
That’s a very clean looking setup which doesn’t spoil the view.
how big is your room and what’s the distance of the speakers form the rear wall, if I may?
thank you!
Gotta love the elegance of clean-looking systems like these. Love it.
