Great room. Which acoustic treatment have you installed?

Thanks Stu. Acoustic treatment is mostly a product called Soft Tone.

A Montreal based firm offers a turnkey installation: they come, take measurements, identify issues, manufacture and install panels to resolve them.

The room was fundamentally good, it’s in the basement and 3 walls (front, left, right) are concrete up to 5 ft high. I wanted minimal treatment as in my experience, less is better than too much.

There’s 6 panels in all (the pictures behind the speakers are acoustic panels) and 4 sound traps in the corners behind the love seat (that part of the room is rather tricky because of the staircase walls in one corner.)

Technical specs of the panels:

  • Acoustic fiberglass core
  • Fiberguard ™ membrane laminated on the face (optional back)
  • Density 96kg / ft. cu. (6 lb / cu ft)
  • Thickness: 2 ‘’ / 50mm (200 Series)
  • Finish: standard acoustic fabric, contract fabrics
  • CAN UL-S.102 Class 1 flame retardant
  • Contains up to 53% recycled content

Hi Alex. A shot from the side which shows how the light plays on the slopes of the tiles.

The Majik’s strengths in my opinion is that they seem to be suited for all types of music. The highs and mid range are as clear as a bell and there’s plenty of oomph in the bass department. Linn speakers seem to be unfashionable these days yet in the past they were the ‘go to’ speakers with Naim amplification.
Maybe Linn speakers work best with Linn amplification, I guess you’d expect that but for me they work just fine. Speakers though are personal - one man’s meat etc - but for the price they are worth a listen.

I had HPM-60s as my first real speakers. Once I compared them to Advents, they sounded awful. So colored. The true east coast to west coast sound difference. So I ditched the Pioneers. They did crank though!

Awesome vintage Pioneer setup!

I would have stood in front of the hi fi shop in 70s pinning over that system. Still looks fantastic. :+1:

You’re right. A few years later, when my sister called me for advice I recommended Advents, not Pioneer HPM 60s, for her system. She still uses them to this day… and I upgraded from the Pioneers to Harbeth HL Monitor MK IIIs.

That said, there was real synergies within the 70’s Pioneer range and the Pioneer system sounds surprisingly well 45 years later

Yep. 45 years later and it probably sounds like it did back then. Incredible build quality. A truly special era.

That’s funny about your sister with the Advents. I still use mine till this day also. A legendary speaker. Although you have to refoam the surrounds every 10-15 years.

My first upload on the system pics thread. So please go easy !

The latest incarnation of my NAIM journey, which started 12 years ago in Malaysia with a Supernait 1 - with the built in DAC. 12 years and 3 continents later, now NDX2/XPS2, NAC 282/Hicap DR, NAP250, ProAc K3. Absolutely no plans to upgrade. For now

Welcome to system pics @PBenny.
Lovely room and system. Great looking speakers! I don’t have any experience of them, do they like being away from the walls?

Lovely and very inviting. Also like the kukri on the left. Mine are on the wall and out of reach of small visitors.

The 286+250 combo is my next upgrade aim… Might be a while though! (Kukri? Gurkha?)

Slight change around as my wife said the Rega Apollo sounded a bit muffled now it was on the bamboo chopping board.

Seismic sink elevated to front line duties under the Apollo now and yes, has more bite to it. Was deployed like that years ago under an Arcam Alpha 9 and did wonders for it.

Just about to cue up Still Corners new release that arrived today, limited edition clear ones are all well and good but buggars to find a track on …

Well spotted ! It is a Ghurka Kukri, in a ceremonial sheath made of carved wood & brass.

The speakers , ProAc K3 like a bit of room to breath, and can produce prodigious bass so they need to be away from walls.

In 1984, it must have been an Ittok. The Ekos wasn’t launched until 1988.

You’re right. I’m easily confused.

Looks like “Kentucky Pathway” on the left wall?

We’re about to have some building work done to take a supporting wall out between the kitchen and the adjacent room, the snug. The furniture from the affected areas has been moved into the living room and the system has been stored. The uniti atom that is due to go into the new space when it is finished (provided I can agree the neat iota placement with mrs boker) is now standing in. This is now the third night of listening to this setup and I think it sounds very good indeed!

At low to medium volumes it seems well paired with the sbls, its only at higher levels does it seem to me to start losing its grip and sound a bit flat.

I’m beginning to wonder what the nova might sound like…
