I think of all the places where that apology might be considered necessary, this isn’t one of them

Fair enough. One more favourite then:

The LX-3, because it was back in '82 while making a recording with one of these that had just been bought new by a friend at school with all his summer wages that I realised that the recording and playback quality of this deck was head and shoulders above what I had hitherto experienced. This deck turned me on to Nakamichi as a brand and eventually I bought my own LX-3, which I still have (seen here on my Fraim).

Thanks Richard. When I looked at the pictures of the 5 and 7 I wasn’t sure if they’d fit in a Fraim’s medium shelf. I’ll hunt down the exact specs and start the lookout for a 5 or 7. What’s a reasonable price to pay for each, if in good condition and recently serviced?

The height of my ZX-9 and LX-3 was 135mm and I’m pretty sure the CR-5 and CR-7 are the same. I don’t know what current prices are - much will depend on condition, whether recently serviced (and how well) etc…

Have a look on eBay and search on Nak CR5 and CR7 under sold items. I’ve just done this and it seems the prices range from about £1,000 to £1,500.

A second hand hi-fi dealer in Muswell Hill, North London currently has an unusual Nakamichi 600 for sale on their website. Pretty sure it wouldn’t fit in a Fraim though; it’s wedge-shaped!

I still have a DR-8 in the rack. It has had very little use in the last 5 years, but unless I throw away all cassettes of oddments from 1975-1985 I’ll be keeping it.

A recording device for me is history…so many better options for copying music…useless

Still have my CR7A, the A because it is North American voltage, alas I cannot get it converted here in the UK but it still works well with a voltage adaptor. It was purchased from a small company in up state New York called Electronic Servicing Labs. They also fitted a pitch control for me, it is near perfect condition tho I rarely use it.

I still have my BX-125 - the only thing I have left from my 1988 first Naim-based setup. I have a collection of mid-80s cassettes (mainly BBC ‘In Concert’ live performances that I treasure) Also a load of mixes from Annie Nightingale Sunday night college rock and Indie stuff and a trove of late 70s John Peel festive 50s. I don’t think I could bring myself to chuck the NAK! The only shame is its volume knob has to be within a certain 15-20% range or it loses the left/right balance. Otherwise it still makes me happy.

ES Labs have an excellent reputation for their work on Nakamichis.

I’ve got a BX125 sitting in the loft: it will not play, which is a shame as I thought it replayed better than my DR2. I don’t want to get rid of it, but where to get it repaired at a reasonable price, and without too much hassle.

The belt and idler tyre on the BX machines are fairly easy to replace and decent enough items are relatively cheaply available. The idler tyres need changing regularly on these later Naks, but luckily it’s a fairly easy job compared to on the early decks.
