That is what I thought - looking at the dimensions the TS5s are that bit bigger than the Micro 5s - it is interesting to hear from someone who has owned both thank you.
The T-60 micros are surprisingly large/tall and bigger than I had imagined when they arrived! Here they are next to the 40inch TV for comparison.
For a short time Piega did a T-micro 6 alongside the 5. I think this became the 60 when the AMT tweeter was introduced. I’ve only removed the grilles once (not easy - you have to remove the base) on the 60s - my son spilt his drink on the front of one of them so I removed the grill to clean it - this is what they look like with the grilles off:
No changes required to the crossovers when fitting the bass and mid drivers. I had previously serviced the crossovers but with better quality caps of the original values at the same time as fitting the tweeters. I’ve got to say that last night was the first night I have had a proper listen and the improvements are really obvious to me now after about 40hrs running in. If you have 1st gen Keilidhs then I can thoroughly recommend doing these upgrades. I can’t comment on the last Gen of Keilidh because I’ve never heard a pair. One thing to note however is that the Monacors have a thick plastic ring fitted to the outer surface of the frame. If you want to retain your anti diffraction rings then this must be carefully removed. 3 of mine were secured using a rubbery glue which came away quite easily however one was secured with a stronger black sealant which started to pull away the rubber skirt securing the cone in two places. I simply re glued these 2 small bits and all,was fine. Just something to look out for if you are doing it yourself. There are places that will do it for you though if you look around the net and one or two on this forum I know have had the tweeter / recap work done.
Well the boxes finally made it to the living room. I’m forbidden from working on this room while more pressing problems on the new house remain pending.
My ddedicated mains with dedicated earth and consumer unit going to a Furutech faceplate is getting used by my kids as a Nintendo battery charging station.
What a lot of boxes! Setting it all up will be a good deal of work, though it will be well worth it when finished, and a relief after such a long wait.
Mine is the opposite extreme, but despite its simplicity still sounds really good. The speakers have improved hugely since arriving earlier in the year.
You know simpler systems have a very high satisfaction ratio. It’s the easy compactness combined with good sound quality. But not only that; the slightly less resolving nature doesn’t have “off” days because a Burndy touched the floor or the speaker cable wasn’t the exact right one out of a thousand for the amp and speaker combination. They sound consistently good.
I have a lot of systems and the most “satisfying” is just a shoebox integrated amp, a DAC, a simple turntable. My one box UQ2 is an utter star but the sweet spot for getting nearly all the magic was a low (but not single) box count system for less than the retail price of a SuperCap.
The only change this year has been in the speaker department. PMC 25.21i replaced by Spendor Classic 4/5 with dedicated stands. Earlier I switched from Tellurium to Kudos cables and added Herbies.
Hello Tony. Good to see you back btw.
I don’t use it for recording anymore but I do have a lot of discs of rare material that I do play occasionally. Mainly radio broadcasts. For example I have most of the Bob Dylan Theme time radio hour shows and I used to record a lot of Andy Kershaw late night programmes.
Found this machine very user friendly for editing. Back in the day I had MD Walkman and even a player fitted in the car. These days I’m more in love with the Core.
Recent hearing issues has led me to question the presence of multiple boxes in our living room. I may have a conversation with my trusty dealer (who does do PMC). I’m not sure the timing is great for moving on the big system, though. The cost of living crisis compounded by the new range is not helpful, I suspect.
Thank you. I too have owned big systems, yet this little one does extraordinarily well. I have hearing issues too, as I’m sure you know, and the whole concept of stereo is something that is no longer relevant to me. But so long as it can provide a nice room filling sound and good musicality, then that’s ok. I sold my NDX2 etc earlier this year and it all sold really fast and for sensible sums on eBay, but things have moved on of course.
One thing I really wanted to do was move away from dedicated hifi furniture, and just by chance I happened on the two tier table, which is an Ercol prototype and therefore one of a kind. It all blends in much better, despite the speaker stands being a bit high tech. Still, they let the speakers give of their best and now we are used to them they look ok, and you can run the wires up inside the rear tube.
