We have a lovely fireplace which is somewhat hemmed in by hifi on one side and speakers and tv (with home cinema gubbins below) in the other.
I’m sorely tempted to borrow a Nova and perhaps the little PMCs, to see if they make a sound I can live with. My issue is loss of high frequencies. Music still sounds great but obviously curtailed at the top end.
I have followed your story and it is inspiring that you have faced your hearing loss and found a way to continue to enjoy this hobby and your music.
Before my left ear went kaput in 2020, my hearing really wasn’t that great, especially high frequencies. Now, with only one working ear and the hearing aids, I can hear all the little noodly percussion bits on jazz albums, something I’d not heard for years. Without wishing to go off topic, if you don’t have aids it’s well worth trying some. You may find that the bits you can’t hear return, and that you are more than happy with what you have.
Obviously a Nova and whatever won’t be as good as what you have, but that isn’t really the point. It’s whether it’s good enough for you and the way you want to live. I can certainly see the appeal of getting rid of that bamboo forest!
We have a Nova in our Lounge and it doesn’t lack high frequency compared to the main system. I think speaker matching for the room is the key to getting the best from the Nova, and when that is right, it’s a lovely easy setup.
At my level, hearing aids restored the high frequencies enough to allow me to truly enjoy and share my passion for music with those with younger and better ears. A gift, to me, while it lasts. I’ll take it!
I agree Mike. Our B&W 804d2 floorstanders don’t really work with anything less than a 250. Below that we were bunging the ports. Something like your Totems, Nigel’s PMCs or perhaps Neat Petite Classics would be needed.
I notice that the Nova lacks a Uniti Gain input but does have HDMI. That’s ok but I wouldn’t trust ARC any further than I could throw it
I’ve had Phonaks for about a year and never been completely happy with them. I started the the “loss-of-hearing-but-not-bad-enough-to-be-proper-hearing-loss” thread while @HungryHalibut was on his sabbatical so sadly I wasn’t able to get his contribution.
l’ve just had my second test and there has been a further small deterioration. I’ve booked an audiologist appointment in a couple of weeks. There is a current hearing aid thread if this conversation goes too far off topic, although it would be interesting to see pics of systems owned by those with hearing problems.
I started out with a Muso, they’re fantastic things, I remember at the time thinking it’s all you really need, if only I had listened to myself! I’m half tempted to go full circle.
