It sounded great a couple of nights ago so I dare say that quite a few things are in place already. Still, I am sure there is a lot of potential that I will try to uncover.
I admit it is nice to try and improve something that I think is already really good, and not enduring the frustration of trying to solve a massive problem that may or may not go away.
Not long after the picture was taken I added a couple of acoustic panels to the ceiling, that really helped in my small room.
Hi Torry – FYI, in my room, I have the 'speakers a long way forward of the rear wall, which also has a lot of glass, and sit forward of the rear wall, with approx 1.1:1 to the 'speakers (as many of the manual tend to suggest), with toe-in. This way, I get soundstage level and behind the 'speakers, rather than a forward production. It’s tempting to keep the 'speakers close to the rear wall, but this can sometimes kill depth of field IME. Of course, it’s not great for room space management, but if you have the room…?
And I found it very beneficial to place panels in front of glass, as whilst glass is seen as porous to sound, I submit DG units can have material reflections. Like the opticians ask ‘better with, or better without’ – only your own ears matter here.
I certainly want to try this, as the soundstage is somewhat shallow, at times I also think the bass is a little weak (but then again sometimes just right), maybe I get some improvement there as well.
Just now I tried to remove the toe-in to see if some harshness will go away. Then afterwards probably try to pull them further from the wall.
Regarding the windows, I have ordered some thinner panels that I will arrange in front of the windows. This could perhaps liven up the room again somewhat while removing harshness.
What’s keeping me from further experimentation just now… …is listening ro some tunes
No immediate plans for a NPX300 although some might say trade the 250 for 2 x 350s is better if and when the time comes. Really happy with the sound at the moment anyway including the TT which has an internal phono stage feeding a pair of Vertere Red RCA to RCA cables into the 332 preamp.
I added two extra feet to my little peace of furniture - as a preparation for “holding” greater weight. It is not unlikely that 350 can arrive before the autumn. When I built this furniture I didn’t think I would be able to reach “all the way” to 333 -332 - 350. So, to handle the heavier boxes I made this little addition now.
