The fate of the NAC-N 272. Still keeps me awake at night

I ran mine in a second system alongside the SN2 on primary duties for some time. A very loyal and capable companion he was too.
I should revisit the XS3 for an assessment some time, never gave it much thought given the current focus on the SN3 and now have a Linn Selekt where the XS2 used to be.
Assume you’re enjoying your NDX2 bedding in as well

Oh yes. A fantastic streamer. Way beyond that of what i was expecting, coming up from the slimline components. :slightly_smiling_face:

Quite a step isn’t it!
I’ve got a 555PS penciled in with my name on it (ex demo dealer unit from an ND555)

Urm I thought NDX/SN2 completely outperformed 272/250 and so did the majority in the room.

I still see a few problems with a SNAITment…

1 Due to the difficult of achieving the necessary levels of electrical and mechanical isolation in a single box (even if the box is partitioned) the overall performance level isn’t going to be dramatically better than the 500 series (and possibly not even significantly better).

2 Due to the way in which the necessary levels of electrical and mechanical isolation would have to be achieved in a single box (even if the box is partitioned) the overall size isn’t going to be that much smaller than the 500 series (probably somewhere about 66% to 75% of size).

3 Due to the difficult of achieving the necessary levels of electrical and mechanical isolation in a single box (even if the box is partitioned) the cost isn’t going to be less than the 500 series, and probably considerably more.

Trust you to pop up and shatter my NAIT dreams :frowning:
I’m annoyed at myself for not thinking of the SNAITment name first though…

Having said that I’m sure if the folks at Naim put their mind to it they could do something at that desired level of performance, something like a mini version of the Pivetta Opera Only for example?

ok, cool. i just prefer the 250DR.

very good but what is the USD real difference? for a separate Naim pre-amp

Guys,

Out of curiosity has anyone tried/heard a 272 with active ATCs?

Regards,

Lindsay

I thought @anon4489532…Nigel was considering them at one time but cannot remember if he ever listened to them, i am sure he rang and spoke to ATC.

There’s definitely a few who have with success , I can’t think of any names but do recall positive experiences. There is also a very good review by Jason Kennedy of a bare 272 with Active 40’s which I think was organised by Naim . There is a link on ATC’s website if you’re curious.

That’s right. I fancied trying the SCM20ASLT. ATC didn’t have any available as they are made to order, but offered to lend me some 19As. Then I thought about getting a Linn KDSM and it all got a bit complicated. So I did nothing and the thought went away. It’s easy to think ‘what if’ but usually, if you are happy with what you have, it’s often best to just do nothing.

Amen to that!

But I’m patiently hoping that HH may change his mind sometime because I want to give another good home to his SL2s…

Is that a polite term for what I think it is?

Indeed the thoughts DO go away. If/when pondering expensive upgrades, keep pondering. If the thoughts go away, it was probably more the allure of the upgrade process than the allure of ‘better music.’ Sound advice.

If you think it means farting, then you are correct. But if you think it means something else, you may be disappointed. Excessive wind is part of life when you have ulcerative colitis, something both I and my long suffering family have had to come to terms with. If only one could pay for Naim with wind!

I guessed right. Could have meant ‘desire to talk/converse excessively’ a la someone being “long-winded.” One daughter has some version of UC/IBD, not fully diagnosed but controlled pretty well by mesalazine. That seems to be the most benign of the treatments, so while it works for her it’s good to keep her on that.

I used to have a 272 into ATC 19As, which sounded great, until upgraditis kicked in and I bought a dCS Bartok

Yup. I auditioned ATC 19As and 40As with 272/XPSDR at a couple of visits to my dealers and preferred both to the 250DR/PMC Fact 3s I was using at the time. I guess the main difference could be summed up as an extra “physicality”. The musicians were just more realistic and present. Mind you, when I compared the 19As with passive 19s driven by 250DR my preference was strongly for the 19As but a customer who happened to be in the shop at the same time and listened to exactly the same tracks (my selection) preferred the passive setup. This reinforced my view that personal taste is an often underestimated factor in choice of hifi setup.
