The fate of the NAC-N 272. Still keeps me awake at night

It isn’t, not yet anyway. Although I doubt they’re building many new ones.

ok, let us wait a few hours. If it is not discontinued then surely someone from Naim will deny it.

I say that on the basis of the fact it’s on their website as a current product and is in their current 2020 Price List.
I’m sure if they added Qobuz support and put a colour screen on it people would still buy it!

Agreed. The extended 272/555/300 looks nice and is simple to cable up and use on a Fraim even if you stick a Planar/LP12 on top. I have never tried a SNx but the 300DR manages to bring out more music than either a 250 or the 135s even with my small speakers (Devore 3XL).

I dont understand why the 272 is so controversial. Regarding upgradeability the Naim streamera are pretty locked in as it is. If I can choose freely I prefer a R2R NOS-DAC but Naim glue the streamer to the DAC so I am still tied up. So my alternative to a 272 would be more like Aqua LinQ/S3 combo - perhaps with an EAR preamp.

I bought a s/h this year. Without color and Qobuz. You see now how good it is

Oh, and I knew about that dealer letter about its death when I purchased.

yes, or a 300DR? will check both options out with my local dealer. two extra boxes though.

This has got me thinking about configuration options for my newly acquired Linn Selekt DSM.
That has modular output options one of which is an XLR pre output so in theory I could put a NAP 250DR on the front channels (will be a 5.1 setup eventually) and see how that works.
I should stop now for the sake of my finances…

Both bring benefits and overall improvements, I’d be inclined to refine the source and see where that takes you. Nice system already you have there and lots of capable options to explore.

They are still linking the 555PS as an upgrade option to the NDX (edit: and CDX2, HDX, and DAC) but not to the current models that can use the 555PS. The website is often not up to date

They wrote to dealers earlier in the year to say it was discontinued. It may be the case that they still have parts and can make them if someone wants one.

I think the Linn has standard balanced XLR. The XLR on the 250 is Naim un-balanced specials. Dont ask me why. Make sure you get an appropriate conversion cable.

You read my mind!
I was just thinking about the cabling requirements, doable in principle at least, worst case I can put the NAP on the SN3. No harm trying I guess…

You can do it. I have used both my 250 and the 135s from balanced XLR outputs. But you need special cable.

Valid point and almost certainly not a manufacturing priority for them today given demand across the current portfolio.
I’m only going on what a speculative buyer, potentially not familiar with the subtleties of the Naim website might be aware of.
My guess would be they’re more than aware of the interest and pent up demand but are facing design constraints integrating the NP800 subsystem in to a preamp form factor based on system noise or component isolation relative to the current 272 design.
They may well also be prioritising component availability for products already in the supply chain namely the current ND range.

Yep this may hold true. Naim are or were still building new XS 2 amplifiers with parts left over, albeit at a reasonable discounted price for certain dealers, just very recently. All with full warranties. A bloody good idea if you ask me and for those trying to get their foot on the upgrade ladder with a tight budget.

Agreed, and noted.

It seems that they are aware and that they are working on it. May I point to my previous post further up in this thread, quoting charlie.henderson in the Naim announcement tonight? thread.

And as for the rest of the Naim portfolio… despite the temptation, I’m not going to be drawn on exactly what is going on behind the scenes, but as I’ve said before, we’re listening, and we’re busy, perhaps more so than ever before. I’ve been asked for example about the 272 on many occasions, and while not confirming anything, at times like these I always remember the phrase ‘the best things in life take time, but are always worth the wait’

A very enjoyable amp too and a nice stepping stone to the benefits that lie further up the portfolio.
