The Grand Cafe

We have a new grandchild - born in Portugal- who is now almost 3 months old.
It’s anyone’s guess when we can meet and hold him…

This virus is breaking all our hearts in one way or another, hopefully it won’t be too much longer. A zoom meeting will never replace personal contact.

You mean with invisible, silent, delayed action bullets.

@Mike_S do you store your CDs to your Core in flac or wav formats.

HH and a few others believe I’m better off converting all wav to flac, I’m reluctant to push the button.

WAV. If it works, why change it?

It’s about how the metadata is contained in the Naim wav file, might be different with a Core v the old UST2.

Finally got my little boat out today. I’d had problems with the fuel to fix and having done that, I’ve had to wait weeks for the big sea breezes to drop. First Yoga on the deck this morning as well, as I usually take a break during the school holidays. Of to spray a few weeds as there is no wind and it has to be before Mrs Mike’s next round of drugs tomorrow.

My dealer addicted wav anyway. Is your metadata a problem? I had to recipe my entire collection when I got the Core, as I’d done in the Apple format for iTunes. It wasn’t too much of hassle over a few weeks,

It’s not, they believe it will be if it dies. But my dealer (who I trust more than most here) doesn’t believe it’s a concern and he could always recover my music and load to a new server if required.

@Bevo what part of the great state of NSW are you in? I’m north of Sydney on the Central Coast.

Balmain !!! Centre of the universe mate ha😊

I use to live in Balmain, love it. Has the strip (shops) recovered. When I lived there the council had just put parking meters everywhere making it difficult and expensive to stop. Idiots, through greed ruined one of the best streets in Sydney.

Yep I love it too . Been a bit of a resurgence with the shops - sounds weird saying this but in some ways COVID has enticed the retailers to get their act together so they are trying really hard to improve. Some have really lifted their game.

I spend 2/3rds of my time in Balmain and other 3rd in southern highlands where I have a small apartment i can escape to and listen to music on my top system and chat to real country folk. Still working 3 days a week as keeps me in contact with the new generation coming through, but the sad part is music doesn’t appear to be top of mind for them which is a shame but I guess all sorts of competing priorities these days

Harry is about to arrive to install karousel on one of my turntables and change over some fraims/Fraimlites - what a man he is

The metadata is handled exactly the same in Core as Unitiserve. The reason some people are encouraging you to convert to flac is that a) flac music carries its metadata with it whereas WAV music, in Naim-land anyway, has it in side files that only Naim servers know to look at. And b) people who have abandoned Naim servers for whatever reason have a secret mission to convert everyone else to the NAS approach.

If you do want to convert from Naim WAV to flac, by far the easiest way to do it is with a Unitiserve or HDX. You can’t use a UnitiCore to do it. After you have converted to flac in a Unitiserve or HDX, you can set the unit to transcode music you play back to WAV “on the fly” which will give the identical sound quality performance as leaving it as WAV. You can’t set a UnitiCore to transcode from flac to WAV on the fly.

I used to have a Unitiserve which had all its rips as WAV and I knew all the foregoing, but when I bought a Core, I moved all the music across as WAVs. That is how it will stay.

So if I were you, I would leave it all alone and just listen to the music. But you may prefer to follow HH’s lead here. Only you can decide!

I decided to leave them as WAV files, if I replace my US I’d probably get a Core anyway. I won’t be using a NAS as a server and if I changed my mind I’ll covert when I need to. Cheers.

I had noticed that. Often the same people who fiddle with cables to reduce noise whilst adding in computer servers to their hi-fi!

Exactly!

So true. All seems to contradict Naims preferred format as well. I went to push the button to convert all and decided why bother.

I’m a big fan of CORE - does it for me

I’ve heard mixed things, also I wish it looked more “classic” than the Uniti’s styling.
