The Naim 72/180 and ATC SCM11 - do I need a sub?

Love the sound, but could need more “bottom”

Local pickup is an ATC C1..

REL suggests the REL T/7X on their website

I have heard positive tings about the SVS SB-1000 Pro..

I have never used a sub, and perhaps should avoid the rabbit hole?

I’d swap the 180 for a 250 and a Hicap. It will make the speakers seem much bigger. That’s assuming your source is good enough of course.

Subs will fill in the bottom end and bring the whole sound together (annoyingly 2 are better than 1!)

They are a faff to dial in so I would buy from a local dealer who can help you install.

I run a pair of s510’s with my ATC 20ASLT’s and the difference between them on and off is massive!

Have you experimented with varying the position of the SCM 11s relative to the wall behind them? It’s possible moving them closer may give you more low end.

the C1 would be ideal but small it is not…

Yup, 250 releases and controls the bass energy missing from the 180. More slam / grunt / flapping trouser bottoms!

Thank you for replies.

I used to have the 282/250, and I find the 72/180 more musical. So much that I am afraid to do any changes in the amp setup. The source is the Rega P6 (again - I have had the Rega P8, and P10 and several LP12s, but find the P6 - for the price, the best) The phono amp is the Lejonklou Kinki 3 - amazing -but not exactly fat sounding.

Im very happy with how this setup works “musically” - but I wish I had “more” of the sound. A bit more body, and a bit more bottom.

Yes I know I can go for the SCM19 or SCMA40 - but rare on the used market and (surprice) I have had the SCM40 - and will always regret selling them - but at that time I used the 252/300 and the sound become the clinical.

My experience with SCM 19s (using the ATC Power amp too) was that a sub was needed. So I got one. Much better.

What stands are you using for the speakers?

I have SCM11s. I do use a small REL sub and a 250 with mine but they are in a large and odd shaped space. This is my ‘office’ system. Positioning well and good stands will maximise performance. I found distance to the back wall very significant, too close and the bass loses definition, too far and it drops away.

For me, those speakers would be unsuitable without subs.

Thank you all.

Behind the SMC11 is a thin drywall. The speakers dosent like to get near it.

Im still wondering if the ATC C1 is a good marriage with the 11s.

Considering several comments Im leaning toward getting a sub. Being av ATC fanboy, I wish for it to be the C1

They are £2k. I would part ex the SCM 11s and get the 19s myself instead of that spend.

Did you mention what stands you are using?

Bruce

I did not mention the stands  Dont remember the name, will have to look it up when home from work. They are quite good. A second hand C1 for local pickup wil be about 865. Living in Norway a second hand 19 will appear on the used market every twenty year or so…

My SCM11 sit on SOLIDSTEEL ss6. They have opened up all aspect of the speaker.

No filler

Adding a hicap will instantly give you “more”, without costing a lot and without taking any risks to system synergy.

From there, I would upgrade the P6 before doing anything else. The ATC tweeter will easily show the benefits of source improvement as it sounds like you know. The bass will become more focused and enjoyable. Again, with no risk to system synergy.

The 180 doesn’t have a lot of grunt and really isn’t up to the ATCs. Adding a sub won’t solve that, it will just give deeper bass but the underdriven and therefore unengaging sound of the main speakers will remain. If you are dead set on the 180 it may be best to look for a different set of speakers. Given the equipment you’ve been through and the experience you’ve gained, it seems strange to end up with a relatively weak source and a power amp unsuited to the speakers. But you say you like the P6 more than the 10 or the Linn, and the 72/180 more than the 282/250. So maybe the answer is to get worse speakers so that it all goes together.

Thank you for your contribution, Angry Halibut, but getting a pair of “worse speakers” its not the advice I was hoping for. I wonder witch subwoofer to get. REL, ATC or perhaps SVS?

Yes I find the 72/180 more engaging than the 282/250. If you had my ears you might have agreed. Since you do not, you just have to take my word for it.

I have had the Solidsteel SS-6.

I thought they looked quite good. Not sure about what they did for the sound though.

Anyway, I dont feel that swapping stands will to much in my situation.

I’m not angry and please don’t indulge in childish name calling. My post is a perfectly reasonable response to your system. I suggest a better source and a 250 would give a much better result than adding a sub to what you have now. But if you want one just get the ATC. It will match and it’s the one you want anyway.

Thank you. The only upgrade to the P6 will be to buy the P6RS. Ive had the P8 and the P10, and the Tecnics 1200G - to mention that.
