Agree one power supply to run a separate source and pre-amp would be convenient but not sure is possible so five boxes maybe minimum for new classic 300.
Was the nc250 already tested with an Atom HE?
Depending on what is the equivalent performance level of 300 series (NDX or NDS?), it could as well be that the NPX300 is an optional upgrade for the streamer. So 5 boxes to start with . And thus leave the 500 series requiring an external power supply as standard.
The NPX300 can power the NDX2 with a new cable, the compatibility guide on the Signals website is the reference.
Hi @Eoink
Many thanks for reply. Had seen that table but was wondering if the NDX300 could also power the new pre-amp (when announced) as well as the NDX2 without the need for another NDX300. I was hoping after listening to a short brief at my dealer from a Naim rep that the digital output of the NPX300 could do the NDX2 whilst the analogue output supplied the new pre-amp. Could easily have misheard and so looking for a bit more confirmation.
Ah sorry, I understand the point now. I don’t know that I’m afraid.
I’m fairly sure it will only power a single device. I think I asked this earlier in the thread, will try and find the link to question and the response!
…
Not sure that’s categoric one way or the other, sorry X)
The question may have been asked before in this long thread, which if so I’m sorry I didn’t see, but if you replace the NAC-N272 with the new 222, then what powers the XPS DR, in the 222? The digital side, the analog side, or both?
Yes I suppose it could go that way where the 300 series streamer has its own power supply like the NDX2 and can be upgraded. Hopefully it will be a stand-alone streamer like the NDS which requires a separate power supply. I remember the system I bought (a Naim recommended system) was CDS3+XPS2, 252+Supercap, 300+300PS and SL2 speakers. Let’s see what comes out, I wonder when it will be. I suppose it will be this year at part of the 50 year anniversary
The XPS DR runs both the analog and digital sides. It requires a legacy cable to split the single output of the XPS DR to seperate analog and digital outputs. It’s Burndy one in Signals table
Hi @Orac and all,
PSUs
Our outgoing range of PSUs was quiet complex and not as inter-operable as we would like.
i.e. A SuperCap would power some pre-amps but not streamers, XPS would power some streamers but not pre-amps etc and most products require a unique Burndy cable too
NPX 300
The NXP 300 will power any new separates product (except power amplifiers) as and when we bring them out. i.e. it has been designed to power products such as pre-amps, streamers and streaming pre-amp etc. The Burndy leads will be the same for all products. No special leads, no remembering what PSU powers what.
The NPX can only power one product at any one time.
Legacy
It is hard to fully support all legacy products with new PSU and legacy PSUs with new products.
Many legacy streaming products can be powered by the NPX 300 via a legacy lead set. e.g. NPX 300 can power an NDX
The XPS and 555ps can power some new products e.g. XPS can power an NSC 222 via a legacy lead (different legacy lead to the above) - the 0.5W standby cannot be supported in this configuration.
This makes a lot of sense and should really help understand the range. Hopefully the numbering of the preamps etc will be revised, took me awhile to figure out a 252 was above a 282 when I first started looking at Naim, was all a bit confusing
Hi @110dB
Very useful reply and provides clarity on options as to how future updates could be planned including reuse of legacy if appropriate/required.
Personally I think I may need a bit of a rethink as it appears that a 4 box option is not possible if you are using separate source and pre each with external power supply. Looks like 3 boxes may be the way for me if I want all new classic but might have to go to 4 for a period if funds do not permit buying everything at once. I did like the sound of the 3 boxes at a recent audition so will need to see if I can set something up with my dealer using my speakers and then more importantly my room.
Thanks for info 110dB
Can the NPX300 be used with the current Superline phono?
Much appreciated
Cheers
No
Thanks Richard
Could I ask why ?
Just for knowledge
Expect? Or should that have read except?
Because it’s not compatible. The Superline requires either an AUX2, Flatacp, Hicap, or Supercap.
Yes I understand that’s the case currently Richard
I just thought the NPX300 was replacing all the PS’s (maybe I’m wrong??) and maybe the 300 could be used with superline with a legacy cable
Obviously I’m wrong
Thanks
The XPS can power the 222, but you need to get a special lead that splits the analogue and digital feeds.
