The S1 pre shining bright

Thanks Geoff. I wonder how many “closet” S1 owners we have on the forum?

I heard somewhere that Naim have sold circa 200 statement products- mainly going abroad- so I cannot imagine too many S1/S2 lurkers on this forum. If I am wrong please declare yourself!
Really enjoying your posts despite this product being so out of my league.
Keep them coming please PeterR et al.

Glad for you peter

One thing that has always bugged me, and as my 552 is away once again, i have resorted back to running the rossini direct into the 500dr, now the rossini has a digital volume control built in, so you can run without a pre amp.
So a pre amps job is to be able to switch between different sources and add a volume control, yes? if a pre amp is at best, one that does nothing to the input sound, then how can it sound different? Well i guess thats because the S1 does a better job at doing nothing? And the rest off the naim range, 552 and beyond must be just bad at doing nothing.
The reason i say all this, is that my system is sounding mighty fine without my 552 in it, yes i feel that my 552 adds, but i think thats more down to having to use the digital volume and as you turn it down you reduce the bits that go through it, or something like that, but keep it close to 0.0 and adjust the rossini out put down so its not too loud and as said i am not all off a sudden missing the 552.
Now i need a pre amp, as i also run a turntable, but as said the best pre amp, has got to be no pre amp, as if its not there then it cant add, or more probably take anything away, but there has to be more to all this than that, but is there really?
As i have said i have never had the privilege of listening to a S1, and it could well be a O moment, i see now, so come on what have i missed.
Once again not trying to take anything away from S1 owners, before you all start on me, just trying to work out more in my head, why i need a pre, apart from my turntable, when it sounds this good.
Also better mention that i have just last night put the melco S100 switch in my system and swapped over to a N10, bad timing as one comes in one goes out, but it might be worthwhile to mention it, zs didn’t have time to try it with the 552 in, plus not going to get ride off my 552 as i need it, as said just trying to get my head round it all.
Cheers dunc

Look will everyone just stop this :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Literally disappeared - that would be a big insurance claim

Shame you need a pre amp for your TT, as you could have sold your 552 and gone on a very nice holiday.

Also no hankering after a S1. Must be nice.

Almost my exact upgrade this year!

Hi Dunc,
Simply not technically minded to explain why this is the case. Just happy to pay an awful amount of money for a pie in the sky in this case.
However, the more I think about what filipe said, I think every other aspect of system set up, speaker placement/ speaker room interaction has to have been thoroughly thought out and implemented to allow for the S1 to do its very best.
All I can say is, that of all the various systems I’ve had the pleasure of owning, I have never experienced something as organic and musical as this. Hopefully somebody ( maybe Richard) can chip in as to why the line stage volume knob needs improving upon? ATB Peter

I should have wrote to you too, just after your purchases: why enjoy your new Melco, Nd555, ER, Melco ripper, Sean Jacobs ps? Better think right now for a new upgrade, like the S1.

I haven’t a clue either, Peter.
But its working so, i guess that is what matters lol

Yes, as i dont think i would bother, i know quite a few that dont, but then they only have one source.
No real way around it, if i want to keep my turntable, and i do.
I also went with the 552 as its one off the best still.

I should have mentioned in my earlier post that I did not just arrive at my current set-up without a lot of pre-history and extensive Naim upgrading.

I started with Naim well over 30 years ago thanks to a couple of guys at Son et Lumiere on Tottenham Court Road-can you believe that? Everything was olive then, including a NAT01 and the CD players came with pucks you could lose…

In the early 2000’s, with remarriage , and travelling to my wife’s part of the world, I encountered Signals Oh woe and calamity for the bank balance. Classic series evolved from 282 to 252 to 552 to today. For me (and until the S1), the 552 was the most "wow"moment on that journey

But, we still run an nVi coupled with a 200, with nCent and nSats… from our main TV. Of course, the nVi screen has long been dead, but it still works fine and why would I need to change the configuration after all these years- the rest I can work out by logic?

It sounds obvious, but limited funds are always the limiting factor-my advice would be to resist the temptation for an early upgrade and miss the intermediate upgrade (sorry Alasdair). Ultimately cheaper and even more fulfilling. Alas, I didn’t have the self control to practice what I advise.

Amazingly (to me anyway) the numbers sold for SL2 speakers is (was) only about 350 if I’ve understood correctly, so Statement amps will most likely outsell them at that rate.

Congratulations ! The S1 is very nice.

Hi Joe,
I noticed on your ‘brightness’ thread that you have quite a bit of hardware to choose from and my guess is, that you have had a chance to listen other high end brands. I’m aware you have the full Statement, but it would be interesting to hear, why you chose that particular configuration please? :+1:t3:ATB Peter

Hi PeterR,

I was not a fan Naim due to their idiosyncratic (to me) wire scheme and power supply upgrades but I made the mistake to go listen to my friend’s 500 series powering the same speakers (at the time) as mine (ProAc Carbon 8). Match made in heaven. I decided to one up him and bought the Statement unauditioned. At the time, I also had the Gryphon Mephisto stereo & Pandora Pre. Sweeter than the Naim but less pace. Also a tad unreliable. Broke down on me twice. I swapped the Gryphon for some Accuphase class A as well but just could not get into it. To me, the Naim is a nice balance of pace and not sterile. Next up the chain will probably be something from FM Acoustics.

Last year, I heard another friend’s S1 + 500DR powering a pair of Magico S7s in a largish room. One of the best I ever heard. Of course his top of the line Kuzma table with the Clearaudio Goldfinger cart also helped. This unfortunate even led to my itch to upgrade my speakers.

Thank you for your reply Joe, and incidentally are you making any progress with the Focals? ATB Peter
Oops, just seen your post on your thread, well it’s the thought that counts!

Well, first of all congratulations Peter. Great thread to read and very interesting journey to follow.
I have always wondered how a system with an S1 and a single 500DR would fair. I guess I have my answer. It always fills my heart with joy to read people’s audio journeys. It is no mean feat to purchase any of the Naim products. However that investment for me has always delivered in spades even my 1st Generation Muso always leaves me with a smile on my face if I’m in the kitchen wipping up a culinary experience or delight… “cheese on toast” for example :joy::joy::joy:

Peter has amassed a great knowledge on room treatments and getting the very best from his system. Experience that will serve him well as I suspect his system was in amazing shape and now with the S1 at the heart of his system it will improve each day and bring even more music into his room. I’ve often wondered what it would be like to have a real live Blues artists playing at home. I guess Peter now knows!!

I for one can’t wait to hear it, and share a shandy with him and his lovely wife. Toe tapping and wishing for my lottery numbers to come in…fingers in ears…la la la… not listening …must resist the urge to dem an S1!!

I would welcome people’s/owners thoughts on Statement.

Well done Peter, I’m thrilled to be a part of your journey. Long may it continue my friend!
