@Debs I had a ‘free’ afternoon so decided to watch Tous les Matins du Monde which was an interesting / enjoyable tale with Gérard Depardieu who only appears in the film for a short time! However GD narrates the story and his real life son Guillaume Depardieu plays the young late 17th / early 18th century composer Marin Marais in ‘flashback’.
Used throughout the film, the haunting sound of his instrument, the viol (viola da gamba played by Jordi Savall) sets the mood of the story. I found the music quite compelling despite being unfamiliar with it, and obviously it was integral to the ‘plot’.
Despite the ‘relationship’ that develops between two of the main characters, there are a number of sad ‘episodes’ in the film but they didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the film at all - and I will definitely revisit this for another listen to the music. Thank you for the recommendation. ![]()
Note Jean-Pierre Marielle who convincingly plays the master musician Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe was in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s brilliant French comedy MICMACS which I have on Blu-Ray.
