The Stoner Rock Thread

With the ability to seek out so much music online, the Stoner Rock genre has opened up some stunning music and production…

So much to choose from but here’s a couple of favourites to kick us off…..

Siena Root; A New Day Dawning.

Brant Bjork; Jalamanta.

Just for the best cover

One of my favourite albums from 2024 and their 3 earlier efforts are pretty good.

Bradford based band whose lead guitarist lined my chimney.

Based on the album they had the giant bong in the studio with them!

Nice idea for a thread.
Here’s the recent (late 2025) release from Maha Sohona : A Dark Place. It’s another fine release by them. Pity vinyl is hard to find and expensive. Might just have to settle for a download

This is all music I’ve never heard of. I’ll check it out on Qobuz! In my day “stoner rock” was music to get stoned to – Pink Floyd probably was at the peak of the pyramid. (We still listen to Pink Floyd a lot at home, sans mind-altering chemicals. It holds up!)

Stoner Rock is a pretty broad genre and a lot of bands get aggregated into it as well as other genres. You get everything from heavier space rock, doomy metal, desert rock, heavy psych rock, it really is a bit of a smorgasbord but there is some fantastic stuff.

My choice … Baron Von Tollbooth and The Chrome Nun… Paul Kantner Grace Slick and David Freiberg. Still have my 1973 vinyl copy, listening to 2020 cd reissue. In 1973 listening to this was often accompanied with some dubious smoking materials.

Seemed to be playing often back in the student digs

One of our local bands. A friend’s daughter is/was their drummer. He told me it was Stoner Rock.

Mine too although we didn’t call it that. This was a favourite:

Love this thread, thanks @The_Lecht_Rocks
To get it back onto the stoner rock theme as opposed to music to get stoned to, I’ve always been partial to the Ukrainian trio Stoned Jesus. Probably at the doomier end of the stoner spectrum. This was first discovery…

You can’t have a stoner rock thread and not have any Kyuss. This is Welcome to Sky Valley.

The first band of Josh Homme who went on to form the brilliant Queens Of The Stone Age

You’re right. However, @The_Lecht_Rocks did kick off the thread with Brent Bjork of Kyuss (and Fu Manchu)

Raw heavy riffs prevalent in stoner rock brought to mind Wolfmother. Not strictly stoner but this one has a lot of overlap.

I listen in morning. Not heard that one…
