I can’t imagine what you all went through at the time. I will go and have a look at the Guardian article. Your brief account of what he went through and his achievements since then are heartwarming.

Very inspiring David, a brave young man.

David, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I recall you telling me about what happened to your son in law, or at least I think I do. I’ve ordered a copy. Whether it will be a comfortable read I don’t know, as I’m not sure whether after nine years I’m fully reconciled to living with a brain injury.

How wonderful to be able to write a novel, it’s a fantastic achievement. I’ll take a look at the review in today’s paper, and look forward to reading the book when it arrives. It’s a signed copy too.

Nigel thanks. On the Guardian website there is his account of what happened and what the book means to him and also, separately, there is a review. I think you won’t find it an uncomfortable read at all.

You can hear him discussing it with Emma Barnett in the BBC Sounds App. The Times did a great, and long, profile piece on him, but you need a subscription to read it.

It’s available at Waterstones too which I will be calling in on the way back from the opticians on Friday.

Actually Waterstones broke the embargo and sent pre-ordered copies out a couple of weeks before it was published! And our local Waterstones had annoyingly sold out this morning, which I told them off about! Amazon have it of course.

But thank you for your interest. You won’t be disappointed.

Hi Ian, I was unaware of this awful incident, we hope that over time there is more improvement in his overall recovery. No wonder you reached out when Ian and Sarah had their strokes last year, brain injuries seem to be a lottery in outcomes. It makes me feel quite humbled now. I think that there will be a lot of us reading the book, with what might have been thoughts. Best wishes to all.

It’s a very fine review, and a really lovely interview. I hope you don’t mind if I post a link here. There is so much with which I can empathise.

I can’t imagine what you’ve all been through. Have bought a copy on Kindle.

Max I think we first made contact after Sarah’s shocking stroke, which was apparently very similar to the one my younger brother had a year before Sarah, but he lives in Dorchester which has a very poor medical infrastructure, so had a much less favourable outcome than I think Sarah did.

Patrick’s cardiac arrest was several years earlier. Like all serious brain injuries, both were life changing for the individuals concerned and our family.

I have done so too. I’ve just finished my 99th read of Elidor so I can start this tomorrow whilst waiting for Mrs Guinnless at the hospital.

I did buy a paper copy of “The Owl Service” from Waterstones last week so I’m not a total heathen! :upside_down_face:

A serial Garnerite? Same here. Was hoping something similar from Andrew Michael Hurley among my Xmas gifts. Sadly, not to be. DGP

Not really but as a kid I read Elidor many times and thought it was brilliant. I bought a 1960s copy off the ‘bay and just finished it tonight and it is still brilliant. I never got around to reading any of Alan Garner’s other books but will read them all overthe next few months. :slightly_smiling_face:

Elidor is undoubtedly the most coherent. I reread Red Shift as it is so densely written it always delivers something new. I heard Weirdstone as a play on BBC radio as a 7/8 year old I’ll in bed and had the Puffin edition on permanent loan from the Junior Library. Have to read the Weirdstone books in order. DGP
