A bygone age, that’s for sure, and my 84 y/o aunt reckons today’s, largely poly-tunnel grown strawb’s, are bitter compared to the ones of yesteryear, although that could be down to her increasingly sweep palate, where any main course is merely the entrée to a sweet pudding!
I think taste buds decay as we get older? I see Tom Kerridge doing his adverts for a certain well known food retailer saying the same thing .
Sadly, it seems so, just like hearing changes – and yesterday, during a hospital visit for her, she decided to buy/try some M&S strawb’s, in the hope these are sweeter. I may be getting some free strawb’s later today ![]()
My wife and me had hearing tests today and I have moderate high frequency loss in both ears, wife is similar but not an bad.
Result I have hearing aids they are for gatherings and at home use watching TV.
The make is Danalogic 77. They seem very simple aids, but work well. Been listening to music at a lower than normal level and hearings lyrics like never before.
Done via NHS without Dr referal and all sorted in less than 2 weeks.
As my sons said, maybe you’ll go off Elton and Erasure now…..
Couple of Lemon Drop Martinis in our garden/yard to celebrate another nice non-heatwave evening. Dee-lish.
Went out into the garden with the intention of cutting back the weeds which had overtaken our vegetable garden since Mrs. H. hay fever became too much. Five hours later I have filled bins worth of greenery and am feeling well pleased. We’ll have to see what price there is to be paid but my spine has struggled with anything more than 30 minutes for a couple of years now. Given that I’ve only just recovered from bout number 2 of alleged Bursitis I’m feeling pretty great. Well aware I’m no longer designed to last but the garden is looking like a garden again albeit far from where I’d want it to be.
I know the feeling, biggest mistake of my life is moving , the second biggest is not being able to look after this home of 55 years with decrepit knees and without a car.
My view is that there comes a time when I must adapt to my circumstances
I hope my comments are not seen as lecturing or unhelpful in any way , but I was starting to think about moving before I had the brain haemorrhage cum stroke
Absolutely not seen that way @Ian2001. Always laughed at my father reducing the back garden with patios and concrete and then turning a lovely front garden into a driveway. Offspring’s godparent took a great back garden and turned it into a bit of concrete and a water feature.
I am no longer laughing. Loved today but if there isn’t a price to pay there will be some point soon or next time I go out to do some work.
I love our house and garden but I too know that with my spine and her hay fever there will come a point I’ll need to make some decisions.
After a couple of Lemon Drops, onto two Between The Sheets to end the evening…
Before the bats arrive for their twilight feast, always a joy to watch (shouldn’t be long till they’re on the wing).
I also have Danalogic 77s on the NHS. I self referred via Specsavers for high frequency loss. I have had them 2 years so your aids may be updated/different versions. Just in case you are not aware, (Specsavers were a little reluctant to initially offer me much beyond basic functions), there is an App to download that will control the aids via a phone. It is called BeMore. I’m sure there are more but I have 3 audio programs, “All Around” “Music” " Hear in Noise". Each can be controlled via a useful graphic equaliser and other filters. I find this really useful for music. On the “Music” program I asked them to give a bit of control over bass and mids, which is also useful.
I found this out once I had them and went back and they programmed more stuff into them.
I find them really helpful for TV at the recommended volume, but this is way too much for my music system so a use a more subtle uplift. Good luck with yours.
Thank you.
The audiologist got me to download the app whilst there, and we set it together.
I used mine last night to listen to music and TV and they were good.
Going to theatre tomorrow and will use there.
I don’t have to use them all the time, mainly around large spaces/groups with lots of noise plus music and TV.
Early days but so far so good
That’s great, I was kept a bit in the dark.
Offspring heading back to Sheffield to look at accommodation and start rehearsals for a solo gig for the lead singer in one of their two bands so we took the opportunity to drop them at Stockport rather than Picc. and then take a trip to Edgeley with the tiny terrorist (grand child number 2) to the extraordinary Blooms Cafe and Wellbeing cafe in only its 3rd month of opening.
Putting aside the odd title and the equally odd choice of location, this is one of barely half a dozen places in the UK you can get authentic NOLA cooking. It has the ambience of a low rent NOLA Po’Boy restaurant such as Johnny’s but not the size. Definitely has the chops though.
My shrimp Po’Boy was exceptional and the Beignets and black Americano finished the job. There will be no main meal tonight after that.
It falls just off the easily walkable route from Stockport station to Edgeley Park so I need my team to draw Stockport in a cup else I need some other excuse for drifting that far out of my way just for food.
Just arranged home collection for my Nait 5i (italic) with the British Heart Foundation ![]()
I’m never going to use it and I’m happy to do my bit for charity.
Hope they get a good price for it.
Yesterday I played golf at the Rolls of Monmouth golf course. It was the ancestral home of the Rolls family. As in Royce. An amazing house in beautiful countryside.
I read that Charles Rolls was the first Briton to be killed in a powered flying accident in 1910, he was 32.
That is a lovely selfless act, MrDom.
Well done!
At which time the RR badge on their cars was changed from red to black.

Cut some more hedge.
Down the side of the driveway and along the road. Reckon I’ve now three quarters of it done.
Zhukov, of course, kept me supplied in throw toys throughout.
Willy.
Last night I went to see the RSC’s production of Cyrano de Bergerac that has now transferred to the Noel Coward Theatre on St Martins Lane, London. It was supposed to have Adrian Lester in the lead role but it was his understudy, Daniel Norfield - made no difference, he was absolutely brilliant. A wonderful production with the whole cast superb in a top notch set. Very funny at times but the last 20 mins were incredibly moving. Quite a few empty seats so if you’re in London in the next 6 weeks I would highly recommend
Hang on a minute that is clearly photoshopped.
Green grass! - come on - everyone knows grass is brown parched and tinderbox yellow.
