Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
My go to album
I’m an eclectic SOB to say the least, but Five Leaves Left is also one of my go to albums and an all-time favourite…sublime!
Seems sensible.
That’s going to be a hard one to report on as the whole system has been serviced and DR’d, we have a new listening room with a different power supply and power cables.
The only thing that remains the same are the Kudos speakers
Obviously the system is stone cold nd needs running in for a few months but the initial impressions are very positive.
Looks fab, Señor Bear.
Nigel looks brilliant. Have you had an aerial installed?
Very happy for you, PB.
Beautifully and carefully set-up. Much to enjoy. Cheers
Thanks Phil, as you can imagine there was a lot of planning and a lot of input and hard work from @Cymbiosis, who’s help, was greatly appreciated
Finally! After a rather extended wait due to the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle, the 500 arriving just as I was about to take my first proper holiday in two years! Murphy’s Law applies quite often in this business and having a solid appointments diary last week meant that the only reasonable option was to do the installation on Good Friday bank holiday.
Nigel had the Fraim ready for me and after a little bit of a rejig, checking everything for tightness and then levelling up I commenced the build and about four hours later we had music.
Despite everything being stone cold and just back from a service, all present were very pleased to hear just how good the system sounded!
Having wired up the system and checked all the cable dressing I experimented with positioning the 808s. I have to say that despite the lack of internal soft furnishings at the moment in Nigel‘s room we achieved an extremely good sound which will only get better and better over the next few weeks as everything settles down
I will return in due course once the system has running and the room is fully furnished to Nigel‘s requirement for a final set up.
KR Peter
Very very nice👍
Very nice Mr Bear and typically Peter to go the extra mile on a bank holiday. I hope he’s now enjoying that well-earned holiday as much as you are no doubt now enjoying the system and new house. Happy Easter!
That looks very nicely done and I’m sure you’ll be delighted with it, especially after a long wait. The only thing I’d do is get rid of the Fraim between the speakers. It looks a bit silly and it’s too low to cover all those wires. Why not get a good looking small cupboard and hide the AV bits inside? You can then use an IR re-sender so you can control them with the doors closed.
I actually think another level of Fraim would be far more appropriate as that would cover the sockets that can be seen if Nigel considers it bothersome and it would give Nigel somewhere to leave his LPs when he’s playing them.
On the subject of boxing it in between the speakers in some form of enclosure with doors - I feel that would undoubtedly degrade the sound. For the AV gear what has been done is fine and the best solution but it is a pity the socket is a little high on the wall.
I actually prefer to see the av units out in the open Nigel and the sockets don’t offend. Funnily enough you don’t tend to notice them and as Peter says, adding a unit between the speakers will degrade the sound quality which is unacceptable.
It’s certainly not a square room Mark. The room dimensions are about width of 20 foot and length of over 40 foot with a height of over 30 foot so it’s a considerably bigger room with plenty of space for the system to breath.
Am I happy with the sound, it’s very different to my old system and it’s been so long since I heard the old system it’s hard to compare. There have been some big changes and they have all been done at once so I have no idea which part of the upgrade is having the biggest effect.
The sound is very good and enjoyable, but there is more to come. I am sure there is more detail to come. I am experiencing the good old fashioned ups and down of running in, some tracks are very exciting, some are quite flat.
What is obvious is just how much quieter the DR amps are, they have a relaxed maturity about them. They are very composed and very musical but at the moment a little too safe. I am waiting for the sparkle to come through. I know it’s going to take time for the system to settle down but we’ll get there
It will, Nigel, it will
