Tour de France 2024 đŸ‡«đŸ‡·

Very tragic, awful thing to happen for all concerned.
The bane of cycle racing is competitor vulnerability, and lack of protection when things go wrong.

Was a great race although the problems for the peloton when leaving the road for the gravel give credence to the likes of Simon Yates who thinks it’s supposed to be ‘road cycling’. Leeds’ favourite son kept me on the edge of my seat to the end. Sadly he looked to just get his sprint timing wrong but second in that race is no mean achievement. It’s been a terrific first week. As ever pro cyclists leave me open mouthed in awe.

A great day of cycling. Probably one of my favourites. Felt gutted for Tom Pidcock.

Felt the same for Jasper Stuyven, thought he had Lidl-Trek’s first stage victory in the bag for the while. He must have felt gutted (and not to mention the oxygen debt) getting caught and passed on the flamme rouge.

The winner, Anthony Turgis on this his 7th TdF outing would have had little idea this stage would end with his first Grand Tour victory. He also won the mid-stage prime sprint at Fontette to collect 20 points and plus the 50 points for the stage win, which moved him up the Points Classification to 4th place overall.

Meanwhile; the first finisher of the chasing peloton was the Green Jersey Biniam Girmay in 9th place collecting another 8 points towards his ever growing lead, none of his rival competitors scored any points on stage 9.

Despite the difficulties and unpredictability of gravel the stage resulted in little or no changes to the top classifications.

Jasper put in a stirling effort. I’m sure he was absolutely gutted.

Is it me or does anyone else think Jonas Vingegaard has a calmer demeanour on this tour?

Yes
it’s almost like he has a cunning plan (to quote Blackadder), A plan so cunning, you could put a tail on it & call it a weasel :joy:

Jonas Vingegaard would seem to have recovered very quickly from his horrid crash in April which left him with a punctured lung and broken ribs, but regardless to the actual recovery this would have interrupted his training and planning for le tour.
He’s a born racer and competitive guy but they were nasty injuries to overcome, it must affect him both psychologically and physically so little wonder if he’s lost the edge; especially when considering who he is up against.

He’s been talking to Danish media about the crash in the Basque country and he basically said:

  • When you have a crash as bad as I had there, you reconsider whether it’s worth it and whether you want to expose yourself to the risks that it is now.
  • It was so bad that I thought I was going to die. As I lay there thinking that, I thought if I survive this, I’ll stop cycling.

So it was clearly very traumatic for him and must still pray on his mind.

Stage 10 : Orléans - Saint-Amand-Montrond (187.3km)

A very flat stage which maybe an easy cruise to offload the bunch sprint finish but if the forecast 26km/h wind gust strength picks up along the route it could turn into a very challenging ride with breaks into many pelotons. It’s also forecast to be cloudy but a very warm 31ÂșC.

Stage 11 : Évaux-les-Bainsâ€șLe Lioran (211km)

With Jasper Philipsen’s win of yesterday, the Points Classification has narrowed down to a two horse race - so the sprint Prime at 65km will be fought over between Alpecin-Deceuninck and IntermarchĂ© - Wanty, for the 20 juicy points on offer. Attacks from the lean climber stage hunters will come soon after. The later mountainous terrain is not particularly difficult (for a mountain stage) but this is yet another very long stage so the GC peloton may concentrate on riding steady to mark each other rather than chase down a breakaway.
