Of course the main benefit of the Townsend podiums is not sonic at all; instead it’s the reduced likelihood of hitting the speaker with the vacuum cleaner!

I believe you, and as I said, I read some encountered that issue, but a minority vs all the satisfied ones.
Well removed my gaia 111, last night and can’t say i have missed them, well that was at first, but after a few hours, i started to miss more and more it just sounded wrong.
Been working away for a few days, but while away my wife has been using is and she even said what had i done to it, as it sounds different and not as good, she did think she was using it wrong.
So it looks like i will be fitting them again and leaving it alone.
Replaced by what?
Scrap that, it sounds just wrong without them

Hi Chag, as I think I mentioned they won’t necessarily work with all speaker designs. Apparently they were tried under Kudos 808s and failed to a group of experienced ears.
Strangely I do now not think, that my system/room would have coped without them having introduced the S1. ATB Peter
Don’t remember about what we were discussing. Townsend podiums? My response was about some issues I read about them. But a majority seem to be satisfied.
On Stillpoints, i have never read negative comments. I have finite elemente cerabases, they work on the same principle.

Is the goal with these products to achieve a better sound than the engineer intended, to ensure speakers sound as the engineer intended or just to tailor the sound to the listener’s preference?

Magico for example are selling their speakers as such. But they sell separately some isolation devices to improve their performance, like the S pods or M pods.
The purpose is to isolate the speakers from inducing mechanical vibration going into the floor activating the floor structure’s inherent resonant frequency. Simples and it works well under mine thank you. Peter

Contrary to what was said, devices like TownsHend Podiums, Magico SPODs, Magico MPODs, etc. do not enhance, or improve, speakers’ performance.
They prevent interactions between floor and speakers. They are highly efficient isolation devices. That’s all.
Just like room treatment, minimizing floor-speaker interactions makes a huge difference.

I could add to my previous comment a description of what a perfect speaker would be:
- zero mass drivers
- infinite acceleration capable drivers
- closed cabinet, but with an infinite inside volume
- infinite absorption capable cabinet
- fix, but floating, cabinet !
That’s pretty much the perfect speaker.

Thanks Peter. All clear. I started to believe that a hybrid solution (dampening by compression and partial coupling) may be an answer after I had read the articles of Colloms on the Magico M2 and the SPOD.
