That is possible, given that aesthetics are such an important part of high-end audio. I, personally, couldn’t have cared less about the golf ball; that is to say, if it hadn’t sounded so good initially, I would’ve laughed myself all the way out of the showroom with such a peculiar design. However, it worked; and is such a clever design. My thoughts on the matter are that I think more than anything vinyl enthusiasts have a difficult time paying such a high price for a 'table that had they thought about it could put together in their garage out of some similar parts lying around. 
…yes, there’s lots of psychology in the way that many of us here seem to think. I don’t think that it is usually pathological though.
