Turntable recommendations?

Get a Majik LP 12 with the new Jelco arm and a Lejonklou Slipsik 7.

Total (£ 4,000). No need for upgrades in the future.

@Matteo apart from the power supply in the Majik deck, which is not highly regarded by many

i have not heard the new arm yet however

@biddler66,

I also have an RP6 so following this thread with interest! Currently have an Ortofon 2M Black with a Rega Fono2 and its a rather good if a little lean combination (superb with UQ2, a little forward with Nait2), but I’m wondering where to go next as well. Currently pondering the option of the Rega Aria as it can accommodate both MM and MC cartridges so it can then be a stepping stone to a MC of some sort.

Certainly look forward to reading how you get on.

@Blackmass,

Very interesting about the swap from specced LP12 to the Versalex. Am I correct in that they have a floating tone arm of some description, and is that not as high maintenance (in its own way) as an LP12? Just curious. Any photos at all?

Thanks to all, and suggestions posted. Cart/phono/PS upgrade looks the route to go which I will explore but I am thinking if this will be a false economy if I do want to upgrade TT in a year or 2 anyway. So I think I will demo some TT anyway and maybe just jump a step and go for that, depends how the first part sounds.

High maintenance? What high maintenance? You don’t need to touch the LP12 for years after it’s been properly set up. Change the belt every 2-3 years and that’s about it. If you’re thinking of the best and long term deck, you can’t go wrong with an LP12. If you have a keel and a decent arm, it will sound great. You don’t have to worry about the upgrades, but if you want to, they’re there.

Yes it’s a floating arm. My dealer set it up, so zero maintenance, well apart from dusting it. A couple of pictures below.

Adding a Lingo 4, you could stay in the budget

However, the Majik PSU appears to be similar to the very old Basic PSU.

Some LP12 owners prefer the Basic PSU to the Valhalla, others the Valhalla to the Lingo, other the pre-Cirkus etc.

I personally prefer the Solid Base to the Trampolin 2 (on a wall shelf) and the old grey T-Kable to the current black one.

If you are in the UK, I guess that it shouldn’t be impossible to have a demo of P6/Exact vs. Majik LP12 vs. Majik LP12 w/Lingo 4.

If the turntable doesn’t sit on a wall shelf, the Trampolin 2 could be mandatory.

The Adikt stylus has a lifetime of 1,500 / 1,800 hours.

In my case, that means to change it every 3/4 years. But you can do it for yourself.

Thanks for snaps - appreciated. Looks superb with the walnut plinth. Not a manufacturer that was on my radar I have to admit.

If you can find a dealer near you I’d definitely recommend a demo. You might be in for a nice surprise.

@Blackmass If your turntable sounds half as good as it looks you are on to a winner ! I am in Essex, UK so I will have a google and see if I can find a dealer in a reasonable distance.

I’ve just been searching and my local Audio T stock them, so the cogs are now whirring!

Thank you…and yes it sounds as good as it looks.

If you contact Pear Audio, who represent WT in the UK they can point you in the right direction of a dealer near you.
I would attach a link but I think it’s against the forum rules? If you’d like to know more please do not hesitate to drop me a PM.

Cheers
Rob

Let me know how you get on?

Will do

Hear hear. The “difficulty” of the LP12 has assumed the dimension of an urban myth. Ive been using an LP12 for more than 30 years - I’m on my second, but having said that it’s something of a Trigger’s brush since the only parts that were there at purchase are the plinth, top plate and lid. The deck is now pretty much Klimax level and sound fantastic. But the real point is that it has been enormously musical and enjoyable at every stage of its life and its upgrades.

The only time it has been to the dealer for servicing has been when it has been in for cartridge replacement or some other upgrade. The only major “non-upgrade” repair work was to replace the bearing and inner platter after more than 2o years; other than that it has never been back and forth for the dreaded “set up and tuning”.

There is a reason that the LP12 is perhaps the most talked about TT and that’s because in all its guises it is a very musical and satisfying piece of kit. If you have a significant vinyl collection get one you can afford and get it set up and serviced by a Linn specialist.

Started with a stock Rega RP6, c/w Exact and their Fono MM phono stage.
Overtime, evolved, as follows :

  1. Decent audio wall shelf
  2. Rega white drive belt
  3. Rega Ania MC cartridge & Aria phono stage
  4. Rega NEO power supply

Each step offering an improvement.
But all together making for a super combination.
Thoroughly recommended.

I’ve been told that on Rega tt’s, with proper anti-skating the arm may well not drop straight.

Much easier done in say the UK than other areas. Here in the States, LP12 specialists aren’t so conveniently accessed. One well-known and beloved UK specialist makes occasional trips to the States I’m told.
