There seem to be a significant number of well-regarded turntable shelves that fall into the category of ‘no longer in production’. Makes you wonder if making such a product is the kiss of death for manufacturers..

On the contrary, I think a simple, lightweight shelf for the LP12 would do well precisely because no one is making them. Peter at Cymbiosis would be very keen to see someone take up the mantle as he knows there is a market. I have a second hand Vulcan shelf which I was fortunate to acquire (thanks to another forum member selling up and going all in on streaming). I am bemused why Lynn themselves don’t make one.

I was being slightly flip in suggesting that turntable shelf manufacture might be the beginning of the end for a manufacturer, but nevertheless, the list is long, and, it would seem, growing..

Meanwhile, still waiting for feedback from WS5 users .:wink:

What makes you think this? I haven’t seen a WS5 ‘in the flesh”, but it seems to me that a 2” x 1” steel box section welded to a substantial backplate would provide structural rigidity for the loads likely to be applied to it. Is it the lack of a gallows type bracket that gives you concern?

Thanks for the suggestion of making a shelf out of narrow tubed titanium. Specialist welding isn’t amongst my present skill-set.

Yes, I use the WS5 with the LP12. It works, but I think a Trampolin/Urika is really necessary. I tried different platforms under it, and at the end of the day it sounds best without any platform in between.

The WS5 rings when you knock on it and transfers all vibrations directly to the MDF board. I would not use it with a Solidbase.

Before that, I had a Söund Örganisation shelf. It was much lighter, but IMHO not better. A very long time ago, I had a P.M.S. Shelf. That was by far the best solution. It is probably still somewhere in my mother’s attic. If I find it, I will have it powder-coated again and replace the Solidsteel with it.

The problem with the old Söund Örganisation tables (we had both table and wall mount) was the lack of adjustable upward spikes, which made levelling the upper surface (and hence the TT) somewhat difficult!

I had a S.O. wall bracket for my P3 and then LP12 back in the 80s and on. I used nuts on the spikes to fasten them down after adjusting for height.

I still have that wall bracket too. One of these day’s I’ll list it. I can’t possibly use it now.

The one for the Sondek still is the Mana.

I use an old TT2 wall shelf….I don’t use the mdf insert shelf and with my setup I have removed the hardoard bottom of LP12… (The turntable sits closely over other equipment so there is zero chance of touching anything…it’s safe) and the LP12 engages directly on spikes. For me it works well..I am not suggesting this for anyone else.. This sounds great…my LP12 is a classic Valhalla circa 1984 deck…pre circus bearing.

Why do you have two Undercurrent LPs? Is it both the MMJ 45 + MMJ 33?

I have both the 45 and 33 too, plus a MMJ 33RPM test pressing I got from Ron Rambach a few months before they released it.

Even after seeing pics of it for many many years, it remains an inspiring beautiful room.

This is the Pro-Ject Wallmount-it 5 shelf in the flesh (wood / steel):slight_smile:

How does your Test Pressing sounds compared to either?

I don’t know. I have never really compared them. I have the regular 45 and 33 because I already had the complete 45 catalog, and was still a subscriber when the 33 came out. Ron sent me the test pressing because one of my 45 discs was defective, and he said I had to wait for repress to get it corrected. He sent me the test pressing for my trouble.

When I play it I just reach for the production 33. It sounds great.

Those particular 33 and 45, I prefer 33s. But my experiment on 33 vs 45 has been spotty. A friend of mine has the entire 45 collection and he purchased them when they were released. And those sound generally great. I purchased a few 45s ( the ones that were not available in 33s or the title I really really like ) I was a bit disapionted when I received my 45s when compared to his, mine never sound that good as his. :confused:

As for the test pressing also Ron sent me several titles and it has been hit or miss. It makes sense cuz they were for test purpose some will sound better or worse than others.
I am glad this one, omfg. This test pressing sounds waaaay better than the general release.


IT’s one of my fave Powell album and I was complaining to Ron that why the piano sounds so bad on Blue Note records. But on this test record the piano sounds the clearest!

So I was wondering how the last track ‘Ballades’ on the Drew album sounds on your test pressing. It has one of the most gorgeous piano intro!

The same goes for later pressing AP releases. Not sure what Chad is doing but later reissues never sound as good as the original Classic reissues.

I’ll listen to it later and see what I think.

I’m not as particular about it all. These all sound better than the reissues done in the 70/80s that I had otherwise, so I’m happy with them. I also don’t spend much time comparing because I like to forget all that and just get into the music, and I’m lazy about it. I compare on a case by case basis when I feel like that’s a fun thing to do.
