Uniti Star won‘t rip or play CDs

Hello

I just tried to rip a CD, which the Uniti Star spat out after some seconds, stating that there were no tracks on the CD. So I tried a second, third and fourth CD, but again I got that error message. Trying to simply play the CD rather than rip it got me the same results.

So I switched it off and disconnected it for a couple of minutes, but the problem remains.

I have ripped around 1000 CDs, there are more than 500GB of space left on my 1TB hard drive, and the Uniti Star is running the newest software.

Thank you in advance for your help. Cheers: Clemens

I’m not clear whether you’ve ripped around 1000 CD’s on the Uniti Star or something else before it. If it was on the Star and its behaviour has now changed so that it won’t rip or play CD’s then it does strongly suggest a fault of some kind rather than something that you are doing wrong. Your first port of call should be your dealer. If it’s still under guarantee then he must sort it out for you.

Thank you, Pete

I have ripped all those CDs on the Uniti Star. No problems or high error rates ever. Looks I will have to call my dealer tomorrow.

I have the same issue and assume it’s attributable to the recent firmware update. (Way to go!) Sent an inquiry to naim, awaiting a response.

Thank you for this info. I had a suspicion that it had to do with this update, but as nobody suggested a connection until now, I was ready to get my Uniti Star serviced. I already have a quote from my dealer for the possible replacement of the CD drive. Let‘s hope this won‘t be necessary. Wpuld you let me know once you have a reply from Naim? Thanks!

Hi Clemens. You hadn’t mentioned the firmware update but since the issue started after this and @SFguy is experiencing the same problem it does seem more than likely that this is the cause.

Have you tried a complete factory reset? If not then I would definitely do this before proceeding any further. Your dealer should really have advised you to try this.

Hi Pete, thanks for your helpful reply. I updated the firmware the day before going on a holiday & when I returned I had already forgotten about it and not made a connection when I encountered the ripping problem. I have never done a complete factory reset. Do I simply press „Factory settings“ followed by „Reset all settings“ & that‘s it? Thx

I’m not sure to be honest. This is what it says on line:

  1. Unplug the device: Disconnect the power cable and any connected speakers.

  2. Hold the buttons: Press and hold the Play/Pause and Input buttons on the front panel.

  3. Reconnect power: While still holding both buttons, plug the power cable back in.

  4. Release: Continue holding the buttons for about 5 seconds, then release them.

  5. Wait for Standby: Allow the Uniti Star to complete the reset. It will automatically enter Stand-by mode.

  6. Power on: Press the power button on the front panel to turn your unit back on

I suspect the “Factory Settings” option you refer to could just be to reset to the default settings rather than a complete hard reset. But I may be wrong. Good luck with it anyway and I hope it sorts out your issue.

So I did a complete factory reset as described. It will now play CDs (which it didn’t before that reset), when asked to rip that same CD it played without a flaw just 10 secs ago it states „No tracks on CD“ (which we know for sure is not true). So at least the CD player has come back to life. Any ideas how to make him remember how to rip?

Sorry to hear that. At least it shows you’re on the right track. I can only suggest trying the reset again to see if that helps. Failing that I think you’ll have to contact your dealer again. You shouldn’t be having to sort this out really. If it’s still under guarantee and it’s not working as it should then it’s your dealer’s responsibility and definitely not yours. Try the reset again but if that fails then just leave it to your dealer to sort. I’m puzzled by the fact that your dealer gave you a quote for a new CD drive. If it’s under guarantee (I’m assuming it is as you haven’t said otherwise) then no way should you pay anything at all for it to be fixed.

Hi Pete,

I have done two more full factory resets, but the Star continues to spit out any CD I insert to be ripped, playing them without a problem.
I had asked my dealer for a quote to get an idea of the possible damage, as the Star is no more under warranty, so he is certainly not to blame.
Any suggestions of what to do before I pack the Star up and have it sent to Naim for them to find the cause for this inconvenient behaviour? Thank you.

Sorry to hear about your issues with the Uniti Star, as any mechanism will eventully fail, I’d suggest to ask your dealer to pay extra and exchange it for a Uniti Nova which will be a more robust solution

Any way to just buy an external Drive to rip with ?

Hi Clemens,

If the further factory resets haven’t helped then I think your only sensible course of action is to let your dealer contact Naim service and see what they suggest. I wouldn’t take your Star anywhere at this stage - wait until your dealer has heard back from Naim. You could also try emailing Naim directly as well. The fact that it plays CD’s OK seems to suggest a correctly functioning optical drive so maybe the problem’s not too serious and perhaps there will be an easy fix not requiring the unit’s return to Naim.

Thanks Pete, I will sit down later this afternoon to describe the situation as accurately as possible for Naim to hopefully come up with a soultion.

I have an external DD drive to rip CDs using XLD on my mac. However, I find ripping and storing CDs on the same device much more convenient, especially as I have another 1200+ cds to rip.

Well, the Star very much meets all my requirements, and the Nova just lacks the playing and ripping capabilities. Other than that, you are right of course, although I have the feeling that I’m currently not facing any mechanical issues from the CD drive, but software problems which I‘m sure even the Nova is not immune to.

Hi Clemens, just been reading around this on line and it appears the units ripping software may have locked up temporarily which it seems it can sometimes do. It recommends to do a hard reboot (as opposed to reset) in these circumstances. So unplug the mains cable, leave for several minutes and then power back up. May not make any difference and is essentially part of what you’ve already tried but maybe leave it powered down for longer - I would give it 30mins. Worth a try.

Thank you for this suggestion. Just leaving for a swim in Lake Zurich, so taking it off mains for the whole afternoon right now. Fingers crossed

With all of these Uniti products, you can’t turn it fully off with the front panel switch and my experience (not of the Star admittedly) is that totally removing the mains power lead from the unit for even one minute can clear obscure problems that no amount of putting to deep sleep ever affects.
