Uniti Star

Took delivery of a new Uniti Star today replacing my old Uniti2 in my second system…I mean they’re almost giving them away here in Australia atm. Wow what an impressive piece of kit…I’ve been playing records, streaming via QoBuz and listening to the cd player. Mighty impressed and for under $A4k here. Piece of cake to set up and beautifully built

Yeah, they are great, especially at that price. I don’t think you’d find a better new product to match that.

Nice tidy room and setup too.

Mike – I know you have the Core.
The Star has no internal storage does it (?), so if you rip a CD it stores it on ‘local storage’ (according to the blurb)….Are you able to have the Star send a rip direct over to the Core do you know…? And if so, will that go to the Downloads folder I presume or does the Core allow access to the Music store if it somehow recognises the Star connection (I kinda doubt this…)
Alternatively, I presume it’s easy to link a NAS to the Star…?

Of course, the million dollar ‘forum foaming at the mouth’ question is: Is a Star rip the same as a Core rip…?!:rofl:

Was just a thought on the Star, at the price, I might consider for a 2nd/3rd system and gain the occasional CD player facility…then again, as I now play a CD once in a blue moon, for not much more $ could have the Nova, which I presume betters the Star re SQ….

Thanks Mike, we call it the cocktail lounge with a bit of a Palm Springs theme going on

My two bob, I almost went for the Nova but do play plenty of cds so it’s a direct replacement for the uniti2 (which it smashes for sound quality). Sq is way beyond what I thought it’d be…plus I’ll play stuff on the big rig if I need a decent step up in sound quality. The Star is paired with a decent turntable and some lovely verity audio speakers and in a smaller room it’s perfect

Oops might be. I do know it happen right at the same time my dealer also removed by Naim. Heard they want aggressive sales.

I replaced my Gen 1 Muso with a Gen 2 the other day. Came with a UK plug, an EU plug, but not an Australian plug!
Had to go buy one at a local electronics store.
Naim really have forgotten us down here.

The last Naim dealer I used in Singapore (when I lived in Thailand) was Absolute Sound, Steve Goh, but that was years ago….

I got one of the last boxed set of n-Sat stands in the region from him…in fact, they’re still boxed in the loft…!

Sounds like UK/EU stock…

Normally what seems to happen is the distributors ‘officially’ open new boxes and replace cables for AU replacements, then reseal…That’s what seemed to be the case with my Core purchased in AU, being supplied with a Tapon plug…though having said that, the box showed no signs of a broken seal (including the outer brown box), so I don’t know how they got inside…!

I presume there may be some mixed stock floating around the region due to the messy distributor changeover etc….

I’ve never used the Star for ripping, as I have the Core. I think you attached a hard drive to the rear USB port. I’m not sure you can store across the Ethernet to a Core or NAS. As always, a call for help to @davidhendon :joy::joy:. As a slight diversion, I was wondering whether you can do Core backups to a drive that is on the same network (connected to a Mac in my case).

You can obviously certainly do a backup across the network to a NAS (once a suitable share has been set up) as that is one of the main functions……In theory, I don’t see why that couldn’t be a a HDD attached to a Mac, providing the Mac had relevant network sharing set up incl the external drive….

I can have a play around in a bit….

I’ve recently removed one of my older Macs and shifted the iTunes files to a seperate 4TB USB drive plugged into it (it also runs the time machine back-ups). That works fine, so thinking I should also automate Core backups to that drive, as I’m currently doing them manually. As we know, manual backups aren’t best practice.

Sorry for the thread drift.

No I don’t think the Star does let you send a rip to the Core. The Star ripping software is largely identical to the Core, but the Star rips only to a local drive (normally a USB stick or drive) and that drive can’t be used anywhere else, although you can move files off it using a PC and then add them to the Core downloads folder over the network. I don’t think you can use a NAS with the Stsr, but I don’t know that for sure. I think a Star rip is “the same” as a Core rip SQ wise.

Don’t worry about it, no one else does…!

The Star has server mode though, so in theory a large USB could be used and accessed through a local network. I should check that out when back at home.

We have a Nova that replaced my first Naim - a UnitiQute2. It’s a great unit, we have it in the lounge with the TV and it’s used everyday without missing a beat. I did have a used Uniti2 in our little games room (tarted up garage) and replaced it with a used Star (which is currently recovering from a firmware update hissy fit). The performance is actually pretty close to a Nova, and if you like playing CDs, it’s really a great solution.
