Upgrade advice 52 or 552 or Radikal 1 Urika upgrade to Lp12

I’m good with where I am now guys. Just a powerline on order. Taking a step back to re evaulate the system it sounds wonderful. Weak points are preamp, LP12 and 135s. Look they sound awesome but could be improved to initial upgrades I suggested.

What I have done has been a massive step up. Time to leave it alone and enjoy now.

Very happy to hear that Dan. Some time ago I thought you were going to blow the lot on 500 amps, which I’m relieved to see is not the case.
Enjoy the great system and setup you now have.

Check with Mr Swain about the used Radikal1…

Well done Dan. I’ve seen the Sopra 2’s several times at HiFi shows. IMO that concrete finish is the best by far. They look very cool in your room. Enjoy!

It’s always like that with hifi upgrades. Whatever you do and it can be better. So ideal realistic system is keep my speakers, 552 DR, 500DR and upgraded LP12.

But, I don’t have the funds. And what I have is wonderful.

This would work but ideally at least a 52 to go with a 500. I am going to leave it for now. I would prefer to leave what funds I have in the bank for a rainy day.

If I can save money in the future thwn I can look at upgrades slowly. I am happy with the aystem now and am enjoying what the speakers can do.

The thing is if I got a 500 I would then be thinking 552 and so on.

For now, it’s time to stop. The powerline ahould arrive in next few days and I was going to try it on the wireworld matrix 2 block. The 135s are on powerline lites direct into the mains sockets. I have two unswitches sockets on a separate circuit dedicated for hifi.

The block has the Supercap, 555PS, XPS2 and phono stage going into it. The Lingo 1 is direct to the wall socket.

Feels like a 52 would be a relatively modest way of drawing a line under what you have. I know you don’t want to spend any more right now but you are so close to having something that might possibly dispel any thoughts of 252/552/500 for some time. :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:.

I’ll go away now.

I’m agreeing with @Paul52135 about the 52, and your 135’s are certainly not “a weak link”.
There’s many forum members (inc myself) who have 52/135 systems and won’t change. I’ve heard far more ‘expensive’ naim amps but none that bring a smile to myself more than these.

Thanks @Paul52135 for your advice. There is a 52 on at the moment but if I get one would prefer a late version.

I will have to see how things go as I will need to save up and then sell the 82 to part fund it.

It’s not a massive outlay and could be a way of putting a full stop to my current system.

The 252 appeals with the AV bypass feature as well.

For now I am doing nothing else in terms of buying hifi kit.

What I really want is a 552 and 500 system but that isn’t going to happen for some time, if at all.

Personally I regret trying to do both digital and vinyl good at the same time which lead to compromises on both ends. If one have the funds then great but vinyl play on high level with all records quickly sum up to big money… When I checked discogs and the value of all my records that collected dust it was like 20 000 EUR… I still have them collecting dust though…

I have got better result and satisfaction moving the money from my vinyl system and let go of it and focus on streaming only (pre, amp, dac, streamer). My record collection has a value of a used 552 and 500… Just to put things in perspective

I wouldn’t worry too much about late vs early 52. I have a very early one and it sounds superb. So old it has the original remote and 52PS. Yes I know there were updates over the years but essentially in whatever guise it’s still one of the best preamps ever. Just make sure it’s Pots7/8 and you are good.

Problem being is that you’ll never get the valuations as listed on discogs! I’ve £100,000 as listed by them & it would take years to sell (not that I’ll ever want to) and even then probably get somewhere nearer 30-50% of that value!

Question is do I get the 52 available on eBay?

At the risk of sounding like a politician , I find myself agreeing with both you, Dan, and @paulbysea. I have a 1991 '52 which is in excellent condition, and which was serviced a Pots-8’d by Naim in 2020.

If you get a good early one and have the above done, if necessary, you should get a vfm improvement, without breaking the bank. Given your circumstances, it seems prudent not to get carried away with system expenditure.

I spent, by my standards, a fair chunk of change over the last 3 years on my system, but it was in expectation of my retiring.

At the end of the day, your audio system is an entertainment medium, nothing more, which you are enjoying!

Well is an 84xxx serial so that makes it 1993 which means it should have the revision 3 main board and an rc5 remote. So a later version. Mines a 91. Looks pretty mint and It’s had the POTS8. I’d snap it up if it were me.

I have some vague recollection of an update to allow av bypass on one of the inputs for serials above 7x something Not sure if that’s still available though.

Update: due a service

Be fair! Dan’s spent money and rearranged things, and wants to listen and enjoy before doing anything else, as I understand it. That seems pretty reasonable surely?

Mind you, IF he wants to go further, that 52 looks a great idea of course….

Mines 114*** making it a '95 model.
It’s had the pots 8 upgrade and sounds superb.

Beautiful!

Its looks good to me… And as others have said, seems to be the right spec.

Ultimately… its your choice, though…

AFAIK, the AV mod only applied to early 52’s…? @Richard.Dane

Servicing… yes, just about due. Or wait a bit… :expressionless:

Unity gain could be done by the factory on any NAC52 but it would permanently alter one of the in/outs, so always “on” for that input.
