Apple CarPlay seems to require you to plug in your iPhone. It doesn’t work with iPods (at least the classics I have) nor portable/flash drives.
When first introduced, yes it did, I think it was IOS 16 when wireless was introduced, I don’t plug my phone in to the car to charge or listen to music.
