Bernie Maupin - The Jewel in the Lotus, ECM (1974)
Total new to me but at 50 years old this music sounds totally progressive top draw jazz performed by [Bennie Maupin; Herbie Hancock; Buster Williams; Frederick Waits; Billy Hart; Bill Summers and Charles Sullivan.
Black Sunday & The London Symphony Orchestra - Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall, Mercury Studio (2025)
Along with Dr Dre’s The Chronic I played Black Sunday a lot in my early 20’s but haven’t heard it in an age but I did so earlier this evening after reading about this new live LP and it’s a great sounding record. I’m not saying I’m going to shell out the £40 being asked for this but am definitely intrigued and will give the stream a try.
Due for release on 6 June. I heard the latest release of Aja at Cymbiosis last November. It sounded flat and dead. However, this being my favourite SD album, I think I’ll have to take the risk.
128-page hardcover book with never-before-seen photos + stories from those who were there
Just spent nearly $400 USD (inc shipping) on preordering this box-set.
Is it Metallica’s best album? No, that would Master of Puppets. Is it their, tightest, most technically accomplished album? No, that would be …And Just For All. Is it my favorite Metallica album. You bet it is.
My biggest complaint was the production on this album being mediocre. A grey, grainy sound that was akin to watching a VHS tape that had been copied too many times. This is pervasive across all versions of the album, from CD, to vinyl to streaming.
Judged by the remastered Until it Sleeps track they released on Youtube as a teaser it already sounds considerably better. Can’t wait to get it in my hands.
Various Artists - We Out Here, Brownswood Recordings, (2025)
Reissue of the excellent 2018 compilation I always held back from buying this as reports of noisy pressings where many let’s hope this reissue is much better.
Naissam Jalal - Souffles, Autre Distribution (2025)
From promo,
‘Souffles’(‘Breaths’) is the 10th album from award-winning French flautist and composer Naissam Jalal.Written as an intimate and inspired dialogue between wind-instrument players it features Naissam in aseries of duets with eight prominent figures in jazz and improvised music, including Archie Shepp, Yom, Sylvain Rifflet, Thomas de Pourquery, Louis Sclavis, and Emile Parisien. Blending her own breath with these exceptional wind instrumentalists, Naissam has created eight vibrant duos.
Roy Ayres Ubiquity - Everybody Loves the Sunshine, Vampi Soul (2025)
Not sure about the label but they are an established reissue label from Spain dealing mostly in Latin music so best policy is to wait for reviews. Fantastic recording though.
The Blackbyrds - City Life, Craft (Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf Series) (2025)
Not sure if I would pay £40 solely for the two slower tracks All I Ask and Love So Fine which are the tracks I always skip to on this record no doubt KG will do a fantastic job but when you can find VG+ originals for quite a bit less will it be that much better than the original Mastering Lab masters?
