Hi Dunc.
It could be as basic, as the fact we are humans. Sometimes we really really want to like something, in your case a new amplifier. I did exactly the same at the age of 61 with an audition of a different set of speaker recently and in the end found myself thinking;” Is it me…?”.
Thankfully Happylistener came down and held my little shaky hand, and the outcome was that I kept my Facts. Do you know any Naimees, who could join you for half a day , and also take a look at your setup and maybe throw in some suggestions? Just a thought… ATB Peter
yes indeed - I would do the test again with some Superlumina or top chord cables.
Hi all, per my separate post, i will audition a vitus sia 025 vs 552/300 as my wife struggles w the size of the rack.
I have reflected a bit also based on this post. While my wife is urging to lower the rack footprint, i am not looking for a different sound. Better always of course.
Many referred to “urgency” as a main NAIM trait. What best captured the essense of naim to me was a JV quote that aim was to present “live” music. That to me is what my current setup does in spades.
Now, still really curious about the vitus, but more details, soundstage etc is not really valuable to me vs the “live” sound.
My system also has SL full connects and naca5. I demoed chord full loom and also SL speaker cables, but SL connects and naca5 was by far superior. I am now even considering to buy a SL rca to rca for the vitus demo so its only about the amp. Other cables also gave more detail and less “live” sound in my setting, so want to give the vitus a fair shot.
What do you guys use for the vitus demo in terms of cables etc?
Lets see …
Br Lars
I am also very surprised that you were surprised how poor you found it.
Which was the Linn streamer? Was it a DS Katalyst version? Did you also listen to the Linn Klimax LP12 in the same set up?
The Linn streamer is all about refinements, it is not forward, nor it is up on your face, but it can go anywhere you want it to go, especially when the music peaks.
Hej Lars.
The person I spoke to regarding a Vitus 030- dem suggested Tellerium IC/ Ultra Black 2 speaker cable. This with my 555CDP front end ie a home-dem. Hilsen Peter
Tak Peter!
I had the same impressions as Michael, towards an all Linn system, with Linn electronics and speakers. It’s cold, analytical, lean and boring.
But the streamer, specially the KDSM, is the most musical, rich, analog streamer I could hear in my life. It’s a marvelous streamer ! Just a bit less gripy and urgent vs Naim, but with more textures and nicer tones. And not lacking prat.
I would tend to agree with you, FR.
I only have the Linn DSM with Katalyst, and the Linn LP12 with all the latest gadgets. So I find them both very enjoyable, with the LP12 is a bit more involved, a more bit more of everything (for lack of a better word).
I think the lower entries of the Linn streamers may have been improved recently with the Katalyst technology.
Following on that thread, I spent a bit of time on the vitus site. Some of their kit is fitted with a “2 mode” feature called classic sound and rock sound. According to vitus, some buyers find their kit lacks urgency compared to the competition (who could that be …) so they added the rock mode to get some more forward/in your face sound.
That sounds really silly. Any decent amplifier should be able to play anything well. It reminds me of those cheap mini systems with various modes.
@Dunc I know I can seem a bit of a prat at times but I do know a lot about setting up Naim systems and doing comparisons between things. If you’d like to get in touch then feel free. I’m happy for Richard to pass you my email so we can swap numbers.
The problem with the Forum is that you get advice from so many different angles that you can get really muddled. In all my changes over the last five years I’ve never asked for advice, other than for the IT side of things. I just listen for myself and decide, it’s by far the easiest. One thing I do know is that swapping quickly from one to the other is a recipe for total confusion. You really want to use one for a couple of days and then the other. Forget hifi bollocks. Focus on which engages you the most. Which one do you want to listen to for hours on end? That one is the one you want.
No, Dunc’s test track is ‘My Sharona’ by The Knack.
Ooh, my little pretty one, my pretty one
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona
Ooh, you make my motor run, my motor run
Got it coming off o’ the line, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up, for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, whoa!
M-m-m-my Sharona
Come a little closer, huh, a-will ya, huh?
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona
Keeping it a mystery, it gets to me
Running down the length of my thigh, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up, for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, whoa!
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona
When you gonna give to me, a gift to me
Is it just a matter of time, Sharona?
Is it d-d-destiny, d-destiny
Or is it just a game…
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up, for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, whoa!
M-m-m-m-m-m-m-my, my, my, aye-aye, whoa!
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona
Ooooooo-ohhh, my Sharona
Exactly. Just take your time and you’ll be able to make the right choice. The Vitus amp can always go back, you can take stock of the present setup and then audition again if needed.
He does that, he will end up with a 272,555 and a 300 somehow!
At last something sensible.
You do not know what the Vitus does for playback, right? You could be the next converted.
I know someone who prefers a Citroen 2CV to a modern BMW, it’s all down to the personal taste.
Lumber the 2CV with the same burden of electronic complication and that might change I suspect.
If the horn packs up on my 1981 Moto Guzzi I clean the switch and/or connectors. The horn has packed up on my 2015 Indian Roadmaster, press the button and it signals the VCU to switch 12 V to the horn, it appears the problem lies with the VCU, progress!
Vitus in , Vitus out, Naim in , Naim out, in, out, and shake it all about.
Only with the transit screws in
Lots of focus on one amp here (Vitus, I’m sure it’s great). Eventually you need to settle in with something and tweak/optimize it for your room and taste, at least for awhile. There are many fish in the high end/luxury amp sea. Can you imagine what a task it would be to evaluate and compare just a few of them? To name a few names: Vitus, Gryphon, Luxman, Pass, Nagra, McIntosh, Ayre, Soulution, Audionet, Boulder, Audio Research, Aavik, etc.
