Vitus integrated amp v 552/500

Reading what you have just put, its very similar to my naim journey and feel that especially now, i need to give my naim the up most attention.
This really does mean the 552 needs looking at, even if right now it is sounding lovely tonight.
But right now i need to get my cables sorted out as good as i can, i sold all my morgana cables lol, but they will be replaced again, as re ordered already, but i would like to try and get the cables from the power supplies better, as they are my main problem

My room i listen in is very modest, just over 4 meters wide and 6 meters long, with the system down the 4 meter lenght firing down the room.

Just to add the heat givern off in class A, was enouth to make the room uncomfortably in this mini heat wave we had, if left in this mode for about 8 hours, never ever had a problem like this with any amp before, but then i have never had an amp run this hot, or indeed any hifi

Maybe you could show us your system on the system videos thread ?

Many folks would love to see the famous system which held it’s own in the end… :grinning:

I tried the Nagra PSA pyramid power amp in my system many years ago, courtesy of a friend. I used an Audio Research LS16 preamp with the Nagra at that time. Perhaps the preamp was limiting the full potential of the system as there wasn’t a significant improvement in sound quality compared to my existing power amp, a Plinius SA-100Mk3 if I’m not mistaken. I recall the sound to be rather clean and free from grain, just characterless when the Nagra was inserted into the system. Perhaps a removal of a warm and tube-like colouration of the Class A Plinius amp.

The Nagra PSA should be obsolete by now as it was more than 10 years ago since I listened to that amp.

Exactly correct.

Has anyone spent some time listening to the Dan D’Agostino Progression pre and matching power amp. If I was to be unfaithful to Naim, that would be my undoing. Don’t know why but think they’re the best looking pre/amp combo.

well I heard the big D’agostino integrated amplifier… and it is a lot of money, but it performed very well.

What Naim offers though, is very hard to beat.

The combination of NAC552DR/NAP500DR, I haven’t really heard anything better.

My experience is slightly different.

The NAC552DR/NAP500DR is indeed a brilliant combo, and a great value for the money. No, doubt about that.

But, if money is not a concern, there are other toys outhere which present music in a similar way, with better imaging, layering and “liquidity” throughout the spectrum.

One of them is, of course, the Statement, but other options are available.

Anyway, at the price point of a 500DR setup, all systems are great.
It then comes down to personal taste.

As for simply maximising sound quality (less noise, better imaging, more details, etc.) speakers choice and room treatment made, for me, the greatest improvement, by far!

If I had to choose between a better listening room and a Naim Statment with a pair of Magico M2 or M6, I’d choose the room without a blink.

Right now looking at other amps are out, i know i like what i have and very happy to keep it and just enjoy it.
I think i am at that level, that i just need to forget about it and just enjoy the music.
Having said that i do want to try and get what i have, working its best.

A good amp is a good amp and need never become obsolete, for as long as the components can still be sourced…

Of course the amp can still be used. Obsolete is when the model is no longer produced or replaced with something new.

My point was that there is no reason for the manufacturer to cease production or replace with something new just because the design is 10, 20, 30 or however many years old, unless they have been able to design one sounding better / which is not inevitable.

The DR amps are replacements, it just happens the old ones can be modified to bring them up to date but in some instances, the 500 for example, that involves the replacement of some pretty major parts, like most of the boards.

Your right, Classic+ pre and power were all effectively upgraded in 2015

I had never seen or heard of the pyramid amp until you mentioned it Ryder. Unconventional to say the least, the reviews I read were not very positive either. It appears they dabbled in an entry level amp shaped like a pyramid…that did not work out so well.

Pharaoh naff…

I am glad you have put some perspective to the many comments you have made about floods of Naim users leaving for the happy lands of Vitus.

perhaps this is the most accurate quote from the whole tread

and I do have sympathy for your Cabin Fever and know how frustrating upgrading can be and there are many posts from me on the old forum extolling the virtues of products I’ve silently sold on, tail between legs…

Well there are quite a few that have moved over to vitus and I have spoken to a few off them, but I am not moving and apparently the first to have tried and not moved, or that’s what I was told, but then I was told a lot off stuff lol
