Newmarket.
The locals pronounce it as Mewnarket.

One of my favourites is Hawick, a small town on the Scottish border.

Pronounced, IIRC, Hoy-k.

My father, a tanker driver for part of his life, always said ‘High Wi-com-be’.

Locally the “High” word is never used, it’s just “Wikum”

or perhaps a little more like Millgie?

@Hmack, I am not going to argue with that, seem to recall local nuances of mi, mo and mu at the beginning. Common feature was the lgai/lgie. Really need to improve my pronunciation lettering. Ending was as in sky.

Clearly that’s a Bristol thing. In 50+ years of living in (or near) Bath I’ve never received a letter addressed as such…

I think so, it was late 1950s. My mum’s half brother lived at Radstock and I know my dad always used to address cards in that way. Of course those that came back were written in the reverse.

I live in Hampshire and always thought it must be confusing to foreigners to have it referred to as Hants.

Better than Salop for Shropshire presumably, although both terms are correct.

I suspect that there are similar Cheltenham/Gloucester stories.

Adjacent towns with their rapidly disappearing local pronounciations.
Not many of us left can speak proper.

Pronounced as Chishop.

Cholmondeley in Cheshire.
Pronounced as Chumlee.

As opposed to Chulmleigh in Devon pronounced - um - Chumley.
