Tangerine Dream - In Search of Hades

Here are my impressions so far after a day. Yesterday I ripped all the CDs and Blu Rays to Flacs and all impressions are from the flacs (transcoded to wav on the fly). I haven’t listened to much yet, but here are the first thoughts.

Rubycon

Nice big fat mix - not sure if I prefer it to the Japan 2015 mix that I got in the winter, which is a bit thinner but more delicate. Nice to have the options though. Extended intro interesting but not essential.

Ricochet

This is the big one as far as I am concerned - this has been one of may favourite records since I first bought the LP for £3.99 (I think) in 1987. There are FIVE versions in the set: Original Stereo Mix 24/96 + 16/44, Steven Wilson Stereo Mix 24/96 + 16/44, Steven Wilson 5.1 mix 24/96 (this last one I squashed to stereo using Foobar 2000). These new mixes are the best I have heard of Ricochet - much clearer, more dynamic, more spacious, more separated and with more oomph than I have heard before - especially the 5.1 mix (that I squashed to stereo). The old mixes got a bit confused and congested near the end of Part One and new ones are much clearer - all parts in it are much easier to follow. The 5.1 squashed mix is my fav so far - more space around the elements. There is an odd part at the beginning of Part Two that sounds like one person clapping - I have never heard this before. But anyway, the new mixes are very good IMO, and if I am honest the reason I bought the set.

I have listened to a couple of other things but I am not sure enough to make any comment yet. More to follow if I have the stamina!

Seeing as we’re on the subject! Read a review of this in a newspaper back in ‘75 and quite liked the name of the band so persuaded my sister to buy me it for Christmas and I’ve had it since! One of my cherished albums

6 trax off the new Raphael Saadiq album due late Aug.

5 trax off this album from Miles Davis. It was meant to be his first album for Warners but it got pulled. Miles doing R&B.

Think it is coming out sometime later in the year.
