A vinyl version of this album is now mandatory!

Bedrich Smetana, String Quartets No. 1 “From My Life” and 2. Pavel Haas Quartet. Supraphon CD.

Staying with Smetana, but in a totally different register. His string quartets are extraordinary, not least because they are programme music and, according to the excellent booklet, very personal. “I wanted the notes to depict the course of my life”, said Smetana about the No. 1.

Two anecdotes from the booklet: The No. 1 Quartet was premiered with Antonin Dvorak playing the viola and Schönberg said that the No. 2 was “an opening light” to him.

The Pavel Haas Quartet display their usual musicianship end technique, and their ability to convey sheer emotion is simply amazing.

The Supraphon recording is excellent, with lots of rhythm and dynamics.

New album on the tak:til label by a new duo comprising guitarist Leo Abrahams and drummer Martin France, with Arve Henriksen (among others) guesting. I’m a sucker for this kind of atmospheric improv.

Now playing…

Azimuth - How it Was Then…

John Taylor (Piano), Norma Winstone (Voice) and Kenny Wheeler (Trumpet, Flugelhorn).

Streaming on Qobuz (44.1/16)… kicking off this Monday morning with Azimuth and this trio on the opening track is sounding so smooth and the music is mighty sweet! One terrific trio and Norma’s voice is sounding so fine on the opening ‘How it Was Then!’ A small trip in the way back machine with the album being recorded 25 years ago…

Gentle Giant, Amongst The Darkers (1975 American Tour bootleg). LP.

Inspired by @TheKevster 's post. I bought that LP because it has tracks that were just not available in Canada at the time. As a bonus, it reminds me of one of the best rock shows I ever attended.

As for sound quality… well it’s a bone fide bootleg!

Ah, I’ve just realised I used the screenshot of the ABBA album I’d listened to a couple of days earlier. I’m a proud ABBA fan, one of the greatest pop bands ever, possibly even the greatest.
