Gregg Allman - Southern Blood - Original vinyl
The great southern rock vocalist sings elegiac songs by his great contemporaries, Dylan, The Dead…. Deeply insightful and moving singing and a crack band, it’s probably my favourite album of the century so far.
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & the Lash - original vinyl
Celtic punk rock, great songs performed charismatically by a fine band, and the characteristic slurred sneer of Mr McGowan. Such a fine set of songs.
I love this album, it’s right up there with his best work in my opinion. The deluxe version is just brilliant, CD3 live recording just blows me away every time I listen to it.
I hadn’t realised that it was a remixed version since Hergest Ridge is the album I played least from the original Mike Oldfield Boxed four vinyl set. I was playing this version from Qobuz and I enjoyed it very much. If I can find time today, I’ll pass all four vinyls from the MO Boxed set through the RCM and give the original version of Hergest Ridge a play to see which I prefer.
I wonder if the reason I think of HR (and Ommadawn) as Christmas albums might be because I was given the MO Boxed set as a Christmas gift in the year it was released.
