Camel - ‘Raindances’ (1977). A new era of Camel begins with this great album. This is the first album without founder member Doug Ferguson. The silky vocals of Richard Sinclair give a special quality to the songs and the sax of Mel Collins gives a more jazzy feel. This is still prog though, in the main. ‘Unevensong’ is my favourite track. There are some great slower tracks too like ‘Tell Me’ and ‘Elke’. On the later CD version there is some extra material consisting of live versions of ‘Raindances’ songs from the BBC ‘Sight and Sound In Concert’ performance broadcast on BBC2 and Radio 1 simultaneously in the UK in September 1977.

Gentle Giant - ‘The Missing Piece’ (1977). This was a step away from the prog of their previous work. More straight pop orientated shorter tracks replaced the complex arrangements of their heyday in line with the changing times. Even so, Gentle Giant were still able to show what a talented group of musicians they were in this very enjoyable album. The longer track ‘Memories of Old Days’ on side 2 was more prog in style. I felt that although the band moved with the times they were never completely comfortable or happy doing so. They would rather be playing songs like ‘On Reflection’, ‘Freehand’ and ‘Funny Ways’ rather than ‘Two Weeks In Spain’ catchy though it was!
