Thanks to @johnt and @Dreadatthecontrols for reminding me to seek this artist out, as a track played on Radio 2 on my evening drive home from work earlier in the week, stood out for me to check out further. Powerful voice, a bit ‘close mic’d’ sounding on my system, but a talented and highly listenable voice.
Thanks again for the heads-up.
Opening track ‘Blackbird’ so well recorded and sublime melodic double bass and soft snare. Nice!
The Brian Jonestown Massacre – The Future Is Your Past
Since 1990 Newcombe and a revolving door of musicians have released 19 albums of psych, folk, prog, indie, Krautrock whilst hitting the road as and when they can. Their 20th album is now upon us and it’s one of the finest things Anton Newcombe has ever released.
The Los Angeles folk-punk singer-songwriter steps into a more expansive, considered sound, blending various strains of American roots music into a quietly idiosyncratic style.
Playing this after reading that Dan Steel, formerly of this parish, was and remains unimpressed. He used slightly more colourful language! This is one of those albums that instantly clicked with me. It seems so English with true beauty and creativity, introducing us to masterpieces, such as The Return of the Giant Hogweed and the opener, the mighty Musical Box.
A special kind of magic is happening: owing to decent kit and a great recording, the Half Note Cafe, circa 1960s is in my music room. They have been transported. This Tone Poet recording is a wonderful live experience.
