What are you listening to in 2024 and why might anyone be interested?

I absolutely love this album. Miles’s music reinterpreted by a stellar cast of Eastern and Western musicians including some who appeared on the original recordings such as Ron Carter and John McLaughlin.

I totally forgot about this release since I first listened to it back when it came out. Finally giving it a much deserved second listen.

It is a shame, but I’m sure her many years as Bowie’s favoured bassist more than compensated :+1:

Born on this day in 1918

Norman Granz (August 6, 1918 – November 22, 2001)

Norman Granz was a fundamental figure in American jazz, especially from about 1947 to 1960. He was the founder of five record labels; Clef, Norgran, Down Home, Verve, and Pablo.
Granz was acknowledged as “the most successful impresario in the history of jazz”.
Granz is also known for his anti-racist position and for integrating audiences.

@Debs

Not knowing much about Norman Granz, I took a look at his bio and was amazed to learn, amongst other things, was that he founded the Verve Record label, and was the manager of Ella Fitzgerald.

In the society of the 1940s, he insisted on equal pay and accommodation for white and black musicians and refused to take popular concerts to places which were segregated, even if he had to cancel concerts.

He also had all the following artists signed with his labels during their careers -

Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Mort Sahl, Louie Bellson, Benny Carter, Buck Clayton, Buddy DeFranco, Roy Eldridge, Herb Ellis, Tal Farlow, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Hodges, Billie Holiday, Illinois Jacquet, Hank Jones, Gene Krupa, Anita O’Day, Charlie Parker, Joe Pass, Oscar Peterson, Flip Phillips, Bud Powell, Buddy Rich, Sonny Stitt, Slim Gaillard, Art Tatum, Ben Webster and Lester Young.

The result of my reading is much new respect for this fine man.
