What are you listening to in 2026 and why might anyone be interested?

@DrMark I know what you’re going through (I also had open-heart surgery 2013). I wish you as quick and complete a recovery as I was lucky to get. I assume Greg Lake is singing “C’est la Vie” on that album…

Continuing with the Great Lake Swimmers from last night …

The Legion Sessions
CD | 2010

EP. From Wiki: The Legion Sessions is a live EP by Canadian folk rock band Great Lake Swimmers. Prior to the release of their 2009 album Lost Channels, the band rented a Royal Canadian Legion hall to record a number of live renditions of songs from the album.

Enjoyable listen.

(Sorry for the long post)

I was looking for a new (to me) version of Mendelssohn’s violin concerto on Qobuz and without thinking I entered the keywords in French. This album came out.

Salvatore Accardo | Mendelssohn: Concerto pour violon No. 2 Op. 64 · Tchaikovsky: Concerto pour violon 1 Op. 35 | L’Association des concerts Pasdeloup, Herbert Albert | FLAC 96.0 kHz 24-bit Mono

This picture is from Discogs. It’s the original album sleeve, not the one showing on Qobuz.

I’m a fan of Salvatore Accardo’s and here again his immense virtuosity allows him to remain deeply expressive even in the most demanding passages. There’s no artificial effect in his performance, avoiding the trap of doing too much as we hear too often on the Mendelssohn. L’Association des Concerts Pasdeloup (which I had never heard before) is IMO right up there with the best playing this Romantic music.

At first, I didn’t find the Tchaikovsky as interesting, maybe because I’m used to more energy and punch for that work. I found that the restraint of both the soloist and orchestra made for a rather bland performance. Listening to the third movement, however, I realized that the mistake was mine - I was simply not paying enough attention to the nuances. Once I did, I realized that I was hearing another top performance.

Interestingly, it’s a mono recording, but I pay so little attention to stereo imaging that I only noticed it when I read it on Discogs.

This was only available directly from Syl himself in 2006. This is an extended release of the original album from about 1970 as this version has 20 trax and the original had 8.

Just finished an afternoon of gardening. Sitting back and listening to Emerson Lake & Palmer Works, Volume 1.

The music takes me back to the 70’s. Many good tracks but for me Lend Your Love To Me, C’est La Vie and Pirates are the best.

Saw them in Aberdeen 1977, I think. Great night with the simplistic (compared to today) rainbow of multiple coloured light bulbs behind the set

The only place I could find a stream is YouTube. The SQ is not in the same league as Tidal or Qobuz, but it’s acceptable. And the music does have, as @GraemeH says, immediacy. And it’s intimate. Recommended.
