The Third Condition, a 1994 story by Amos Oz, a tale about an aging bachelor in Jerusalem musing about the changes his country is going through while his personal life is in a small disarray.

Eventually, when the book was translated into English the attractive title was changed by the publisher to just Fima, the name of the main character, making it very hard to imagine the writer consenting to that or seeing any advantage in the plain title.

A book that I was given as a young child, I like to have look at each Christmas. Beautifully drawn and written, it has probably been out of print for a good 60 years. All children have loved it, I thought that I would post the cover and a few of the pages.

Hi Haim,
would you regard this as a book to start reading Amos Oz? I have been thinking about his work for some time but haven’t read any of his work.

Mulberry,

You could start perhaps with one of his collections of short stories to see if you like his writing. Fima is very good. My Michael, an early novel of his, is considered a major breakthrough for Oz. My favorite one about his childhood is A Tale of Love and Darkness.

Thanks a lot, I’m going to look what is available here in Germany. I have already seen that they got the translation of “The third condition” right, as the title is “Der dritte Zustand” here.

Hi mate keep looking at this book cover and I can’t help thinking that it looks like me walking home with a bag full of vinyl in the winter Happy new year

Just finished “The God of the Woods.” I thought it was alright, but couldn’t understand all the hype (at least in the States). And I agree with several critics that many of the male characters are rather crudely drawn.

Now starting “The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny,” which may take some time.

New to me seems to get good reviews, just started, text is tiny (for me) !!

Picked this up at the airport before heading to USA. Frightening but a gripping read. MAD is the correct term.

I’m not a great reader, just one book in 18 months.

I raced through Flesh by David Szalay, and I do mean raced, 8 days. Would normally take months!!

After another read, I came across this in a local shop. They didn’t have the first books in series, but I took the plunge despite liking to read in order.

It’s an easy read and to my mind the first two chapters really captured the essence of some people who inhabit the audio/music world.

Enjoying so far, but like most books has the ability to send me to sleep.

It’s worth trying to read them in order as the characters do develop both in themselves and their relationships. The author has a weekly radio show which I enjoy. Have picked up artists I enjoy and had never heard before (eg Joannie Sommers). Mixcloud

I am reading “This, My Second Life” by Patrick Charnley, my son in law. If you are interested you can read about how it came to be written in my post today in the “Things I have done in the last 24 hours version 2.0” thread here in the forum. Or you can read the reviews on the Times or Guardian websites.
