While using power cords in my Naim system I have experienced an interesting phenomenon. In all the cases I experienced that the sound get a bit clearer and crispier however the music is not so easily flowing and it feels like something is holding it back. The tempo gets slower and it seems some bass and midbass tones stay longer than they should be. This happened on whatever device I have plugged the cable in (streamer, PSU, poweramp). The cables were Furutech and one third-party one. Has anyone experienced something similar?
Yes.
I believe this is why some advocate using a full coherent cable loom within a system.
Great if your using an all Naim box and Naim cable system perhaps.
If you start preferring what other cables are doing, itās useful to know what that is, in the way it presents the music differently. Cable synergy is just as important as everything else.
I use the Russ Andrews Evolution 500 Powerkord they are amazing made a huge difference ā¦ system is more open dynamic and has gained a much more detailed faster bass. On my system it was like a dr upgradeā¦very impressed. I know there is no love loss for Russ on this forumā¦but hey speak as I find ā¦ I bought 3 money well spentā¦I did not take Russ up on the returns policy! I would like to add quite a bit more detail arrived in a beautiful stereo soundscapeā¦just like dr upgrading.
I think RA is very smart in using Kimber Kable as a starting point
Sadly my experience of RA differs, I bought a Kimber silver interconnect and apart from the phono plugs which were nice, (but immediately removed by me as not required and replaced by xlr) the din plug was cheap rubbish and distorted so badly due to the termination of too many cores on the standard plug body that it could not be inserted into my Naim socket. No returns due to my modification, which is fair enough, but they should have checked the din connector it before they sent it out pins all bent.
Dear All,
does anybody test or know the Supra Mains block MD?
Thanks
David
I actually have a US model (since discontinued I believe) for my server closet. Very nicely made, really grips the plugs, but not sure how much a difference it made sound wise. Great value (I think I paid around $80 new) for a non-surge protected power strip thatās very well built. Plugging in a couple of AC iPurifiers really did make a difference though.
So, are the audioquest power cables such as ngr z3, y3 and Monsoon good and suitable for their spec. and constructions with Naim Stuff?
I can tell you a lot about AQ power cables as have demoād the following:
X3
Y3
Z3
Monsoon
Blizzard
The Blizzard is exceptional at reducing noise and distortion but it also allows for large current flow. This had the effect of overblowing the bass on my system so had to return it. Otherwise itās a great cable.
The Monsoon gives a lot of what the Blizzard gives but did not detract from the bass. Could be the sweet spot in the range.
I have a Z3 from the Wireworld Matrix to my 200 and this is also great but not as good as the Monsoon. Noise floor down, detail up.
Tried Y3 vs X3 from wall to Wireworld and the Y3 was definitely better, especially in top end detail.
All in all, these are good cables that live up to their claims. Just be careful to match them carefully and they will deliver.
Thank you @jezoakley,
very useful indeed!
However, as a general rule, if you have different quality power cables the best one (in your case, the Monsoon) must necessarily be inserted between the power strip and the wall socket, correct?
Regards
As a general principle probably yes but itās not what Iām doing. Iāll be ending up with Y3 -> Wireworld -> Z3 to 200 and X3 on the rest. A good cable from block to component still does an important job. For me, it was about limiting current flow and still getting the detail without the bass issues.
However, the Monsoon from the wall to the block worked very well too and I would recommend that configuration.
Thanks again!
So, donāt you use the Monsoon anywhere in your system?
No, I only borrowed one from a friend but it worked well.
Stuck with the Z3 but only for budgetary reasons in the short term.
My power cord to wall is Chord music expensive but good enoughā¦waiting for the new Chord powerblock to come soon.meanwhile I use wireworld matrix 2 quiet good but I think not enough for my power cord
Dedicated spur from fuse box first, then power chord from China using Furutech single crystal cable.
Noise floor dropped now inky black, and base with more texture.
Isotek Initium Evo 3 feeding all my units. Fantastic cables for the money.
I bought an Ecosse Big Orange for around Ā£65 the other day, I meant to put it in the audio system but instead it went into the video system - specifically the Sky Box,
The difference in both picture and sound was remarkable
Isol8 reference from Furutech wall socket to wireworld matrix 2. Wireworld electra to nait xs3, zavfino the Atlantic to nd5xs2.
