What the hell is an audiophile recording?

And Peace Piece started as an intro for his recording of Bernstein’s Some Other Time (from On the Town).

and beautifully song by Monica Zetterlund with Bill Evans 3.

I have Tony Bennett doing it with Bill Evans. They made two albums together in the 70s.

Yes it is amazing how well Bill Evans accompanied singers. he only made a few (vocal)albums but they are all pearls.

and yet another version. Is this kind of Vinyl superior to old fashioned vinyl?;

It is simply one of the best piano trios around today.
All their albums are worth having and so well recorded.

Ambitious new series from Sound Liaison;

The Arch Manifesto
Each recording starts and ends with the main artist alone in the hall, the only interplay being the acoustics of the hall and his own mind. No audience is present except the ghosts from the past.
When the band enters the music must create an Arch, going from the single instrument performance to the more complex band performance and back to the last solo performance.
The same principle goes for the engineering; each recording starts out with only one microphone (stereo) microphone. As the music gains in complexity more microphones may be deployed, the only limit being the imagination and technical skills of the recording engineer. The producer and engineer must make the album feel as one, it should have a unifying ‘sound’, despite the different recording techniques employed.

All Sound Liaison albums have the Frans de Rond Visual Sound signature; great depth, clear placement and an almost physical presence of the musicians.
Especially our One Mic recording series has been noticed in the world of audio recording.
When the Josephson C700S microphone is used to its fullest, the result is a completely phase coherent recording with placement depth and superior realism.
And indeed the critical acclaim we have received for our One Mic series have been very flattering;

“One microphone straight to DXD recording – and it’s totally enchanting”…Hifi Critic

"Fabulous …challenging the possibilities of current recording technology” Inner-magazines

(for more reviews see Reviews))
Frans always says; “the art of recording is a question of listening and the more you listen the better you get at it.”
I was curious to see how all the completely phase coherent listening Frans had been doing creating the masters of the ‘One Mic’ and ‘One Mic+’ series would affect his decisions when giving him almost free rein with a multi mic setup. I was not disappointed. His great knowledge of mic placement and phase manipulation seemed to have grown even further.
Frans has a second life as engineer and sound scape specialist for radio plays. He has received several awards for his work, the prestigious Prix Europe 2020 being the latest.
I believe that his unique ability to make the sound of the instruments real and visual is a cross-pollination from his excellent work with Radio plays.
For each piece of music we would ask the band to play it through once and there after deploy the microphones needed. Oftentimes the musicians on hearing the playback would suggest small alterations in the music to make the music fit the sound.

We were trying to create a sound that would fit the music and the musicians got inspired by the sound to develop the music even further.
The circle was complete.

A really good find thanks to several on this thread who have mentioned her - Silje Nergaard, voice of an angel, excellent arrangements and a recording of the highest quality. Should have put this in the ‘What are you listening thread’ (which I will now do!) but is certainly an audiophile recording as well!

24/44 Qobuz or Bandcamp.
Bay area vocalist and educator Karen Marguth hit the jazz recording scene with 2009’s self-titled debut and has released a series of excellent albums. On 2015’s Just You, Just Me is Marguth and bassist Kevin Hill build from the promise of previous efforts like her excellent Carrol Coates songbook A Way With Words by taking somewhat of a left turn. Taking cues from the bass and voice master, Sheila Jordan, she tackles classics like “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To” “I Got it Bad,” and “Imagination” perfectly capturing their melodic and rhythmic contours, and emotional essence in the sparsest of settings. She makes her greatest impact on her scat-laden rendition of the title track, a surprisingly blues-y and quite humorous rapid fire “Blues My Naughty Sweetie Taught Me,” and fresh songs like her loping version of Phoebe Snow’s “Harpo’s Blues” and the charming Johnny Mercer tune “Love’s Got Me in a Lazy Mood.” Other inspired choices include takes on Nellie Lutcher and Rickie Lee Jones. Marguth is quite assured in a variety of modes, and she and Hill have faultless chemistry.

Most recent album: On 2021’s Until (OA2), Marguth continues her eclectic approach interpreting Paul Simon’s “Hearts and Bones” and “Old Friends/Bookends” with great clarity, exploring Latin rhythms on Maria Gomez’s “La Ronda” and Sting’s “Until,” and swinging with aplomb (“Comes Love,” “Close Your Eyes”). She also contributes the original tune “Maureen” and take listeners on a unique journey on Andrew Bird and Shel Silverstein’s “Twistable Turnable Man.”

It’s harder than regular vinyl pressings with less surface noise and static. Helps bring out the detail and reviewers seem to be all giving glowing reports. I took a punt and ordered this as a pre order back in May from the official Miles Davies store in the US for $100 plus $12 shipping , STILL waiting as release date has kept being pushed back, assume due to covid and materials shortage issues. I see a certain UK vinyl seller is asking £149 on pre order currently.

Conditional IIRC.

Me too the last date I was given for dispatch was Mid November and that was via email last August but nothing as yet. No doubt it will arrive eventually as it’s a limited run of 25,000 so we’ll just have to be patient I suppose.

I think that is exactly the strength of those Carmen Gomes Albums, the fact that they compare so well with the albums from the late '50 and '60.

As the label says in the liner notes;

Blockquote

This is NOT the commercial radio friendly approach, with the instruments piled on top of each other straight down the middle.
In a sense we are old fashioned, maybe we listened to too many old jazz recordings, but on the other hand as the great Louis Armstrong said; ''The memory of things gone is important to a jazz musician. Things like old folks singing in the moonlight in the backyard on a hot night or something said long ago."

Seems to me they are clearly inspired by the past.

There is a playlist on quobuz called Wilson audiophile including jazz and classical remastered at 176/24. Price is a bit more accessible than Wilson speakers. Sounds clear and musical to me.

For those you like the audiophile lp pressings, a YouTube channel should be watched.
Just discovered it.
The last video presents the best vinyl reissues from 2021, according to the reviewer.

@JohnC2 Thanks for the additional info about this PL. I really don’t know why I’m not able to locate this PL in my Qobuz! (regional streaming restrictions for this label?). Would you be so kind and post a link to this specific PL (via Share-option, example: Open Qobuz) ? TIA
