Hopefully this will now work out for you.
DG…
Thanks. I’m perfectly happy with the Nova, but the fact I’ve had issues on a second one rather puts me off a third. So as it’s happened, I thought I’d take the opportunity to try something else. Fingers crossed!
I’ve ordered a pair of balanced XLR cables from Designacable for the princely sum of £61.98; so much cheaper than speaker leads.
That’s the problem when you like something, but it does appear to be a design / manufacturing error of the Nova.
Designacable are good, they did my CatSnake cables.
Looking forward to seeing the pictures of the PMC active box and your new system.
DG…
@GraemeH has been really helpful in advising me on XLR cables: if they are good enough for a 333/332 they will be good enough for an Atom HE is my thinking.
An interesting move and a very effective solution with the active modules in the PMCs. I’ll be interested to read your thoughts on the new setup.
Disappointing reliability issues from NAIM. I hope that you enjoy the new system.
Yep, exactly the same thing has happened twice on mine too.
Given you have been downsizing for some time , I think this makes a lot of sense
As some may recall, I swapped from a big box count to 222 / ATC SCM 40A earlier this year.
Whilst listening to the combo at the dealer over a few days, I had the opportunity to swap in a HE for a side-by-side comparison. I was contemplating keeping my HE to run the 40s until funds allowed for the 222. In the end I ‘found’ the money and purchased everything together.
But to cut this long story short, the HE performed brilliantly with the 40s. Was there as difference between the 222 and the HE? Of course, but bang for buck, the HE is a wonderful bit of kit.
I sold my HE to a guy in Scotland who runs it with…… yip, you guessed it, active PMCs.
I was at Bristol Hifi Show this year for the PMC Active launch. They sounded great, were user friendly and I love that manufacturers can get the very best out of their speaker designs because they remove the compromises of a passive crossover.
And finally, DesignerCable all the way. I auditioned a set of £1000 AudioQuest XLRs……. No difference at all over a 7m run. And I put together a little extension cable with bits from MCRU to allow the active to be plugged into the ‘hifi’ wall socket.
Daz
Stageline N for my newly bought 1974 Linn LP12 and Ansuz A2 DIN-DIN on the move. Ansuz A2 loom now except power cords.
Now you have upgraded and changed and tried and upgraded again and again… Have you won on lotto Blackbird
Drinking cheaper wine! Almost done now!
Thanks, that’s useful info. I vaguely toyed with a 222 rather than the HE, but it would have meant putting about £3,500 into the system, which I don’t want to do. The HE will also sit neatly on the coffee table, whereas a 222 is a bit too big and monolithic looking. I’d never use the PS upgrade route or the phono stage, so a lot of its potential would be wasted.
I’ve asked PMC if they can supply a 6m mains lead for one speaker, which would enable both to go on the dedicated mains. If not, I will buy a long cable to the correct specification.
I’m pleased to read your comments on the XLR leads: I looked on line and there are loads of really expensive options; another place I don’t want to go.
Be interesting to see how hot your Atom HE runs. Like you, I’ve had Naim stuff going back 39 years. The Atom HE runs hotter than any other piece of Naim kit. My new 500 is nice and cool.
Very nice. Is that the Liquid Amber finish ?
I was watching that pair!
It is indeed. It was either going to be that or oak for me
Well……after my acquisition of the HMV Gramophone I managed to purchase a box, small metal thingy, of Regal Zonophone needles for the arm ….
What an improvement in tone and volume ……best thing to happen since the guitar got its frets ……
Yes my friends there’s life beyond the cheque book !!!
I have been watching them for a while, particularly as the price kept dropping. And I told myself if they came down to 8k or less I would push the button, and then they did on Monday
