How are you finding it? I keep wanting to buy a Degritter but can’t justify the cost vs the number of faults that seem to be reported. The Humminguru looks great and only 1/3 the price.
I’ve had Humminguru for two years now and been really happy with it - for the price.
It’s not the most silent washer and it takes a bit time to run the program to get satisfied result but no other complaints. I run it in other room where I am so the noise doesn’t bother me that much.
Will get it next week ![]()
“Just” a new plug.
I’d been experimenting with plug order on my M6 and also comparing using it versus dedicated spurs (10mm etc. etc.). I’d drawn some conclusions with some clear preferences for Radikal 2, KDSM, PhoenixNet and EE8 all going into the M6, and both 552DR and 500DR having their own spurs. What I finally got to grips with was where to plug the Zenith.
It had been on a separate spur with a Sarum T mains cable fitted with a round pin plug and I was comparing it with an “old” Sarum (non-T) with a 13amp plug going into the M6. M6 definitely better; more cohesive, more engaging. So good in fact that it took a few months before I got around to having the Sarum T mains cable re-terminated.
Off it went to Chord on Tuesday and it arrived back on Friday with this new, very shiny silver (it’s not Silver but an alloy developed by Chord) plug. Not expecting a great deal, I swapped the cables over and… oh my… “just” a new plug (ok, so it’s on a Sarum T
), but what a lovely and very worthwhile upgrade.
Rega io as a backup for my valve amp. Weird shallow speaker sockets and a terrible remote control which I won’t be using but otherwise something of a bargain.
I think my Degritter II is fantastic. I have well over 2000 cleanings on it. I had a valve go bad over a year ago. However, Degritter turned the repair around in about two weeks, and when I got it back they included all fresh accessories (new version of the fluid, filters, updated manual, etc). They took care of the whole process including shipping. All I had to do was drop it off at UPS 5 mins away and wait a couple weeks to get it back.
I wish everyone had great customer support like that.
I participate on the Degritter II discussion thread on Steve Hoffman forums. It’s a pretty active and long thread with a lot of contributors. There are really very few reports of issues with the Degritter machines. Mine seems to be very much an edge case.
It is rather interesting the impact “just a plug” can have. If I hadn’t experienced it myself, I would think most of this stuff was nonsense but what I have found with experimenting with different DIY power cords is that when you get to a certain quality of cooper wire, the ends themselves will have more impact on the sound vs the wire itself. Another thing I have learned is that while many think of power cords as “tweaks” ( if you have more entry level kit & depending on what you’re using, they can be). But having better kit, & using top notch power cords/connectors & matching outlets can be transformational. The power related upgrades I have made, have had more impact on sound then any black box upgrade I have done.
I agree, a while back I had a demonstration of the effectiveness of replacing my old connectors (interconnects and speaker cables) and was really impressed with the results. The comparison was against the latest generation of Chord connectors (ChorAlloy?) and I spent a good while chatting about how and why they existed in the first place. Apparently all the conventional options were tested - gold, silver, rhodium - as well as a variety of alloys, and solders and crimping, establishing what sounded best and then refining the alloy until they were completely happy with the results. What was also nice was that they’re made in the UK and didn’t cost a fortune so even the entry range of cables benefitted from them, not just the high-end SarumTs and Music. Anyway, after a few minutes of listening, I ended up replacing all my connectors for a lot less than a black box upgrade.
Thank you JDP, I might just have to suck it up a buy one. The Okki Nokki can look on from a shelf and just be used for pre-loved records.
I’ve had my Humminguru for a number of years now (bought several years before the Nova model came out) & haven’t had any issues/it seems to work great for the price. I also have a cheap 3D printed vacuum based cleaner that a local makes, which I started with. Find the Humminguru does a better job, as noted above the cleaning noise isn’t the most pleasant but to be fair can’t say that about any ultrasonic cleaner I’ve heard in general. I typical just put it on a clean cycle & leave the room to do something else. I currently only have ~300 records so couldn’t justify the expense for something like the Degritter (here the guru was something like 1/7th the price), though if I had a much larger collection I might consider it.
Yes, I use my Okki Nokki as a presoak for used records, with Audio Intelligent Vinyl Solutions’ Formula No. 15 Enzymatic. I follow that with a double tank (cleaning solution + DW rinse) in the Degritter II. I get really great results that way.
I have had a Humminguru for a few years now and I think it does a fine job. I use an old VPI for very dirty 2nd hand LPs but the HG is great just to freshen up LPs and for new purchases. The fact that Jeff’s Amazing Shop Of Wonders stocks supplies is a bonus as well
